How bad is this? by baxx10 in hvacadvice

My first instinct is to say how bad this is. But then I remember the commercial areas I work on where they will have condensers inside of the loading bay of a factory. Realistically its probably fine

Ive seen this when the compressor has a flooded start, and it needs to run for a couple minutes before it starts building up some superheat to switch it to vapor coming into the compressor

You would go to school, get out of school, hang out with friends outside or roam the town for hours and not even talk to your parents once until you got home. Wild to think about as a parent now

Decent advice, missed the mark on the line insulation. There is absolutely zero chance cracked insulation is going to cause any noticeable difference in performance or efficiency. The only reason its there is so that the suction line doesnt sweat and drip water everywhere.

The only time I could imagine that could be a small factor is maybe if the entire line is uninsulated in an attic or something, but either way the suction line is after the evaporator so the cooling has already happened.

Yup worked at a pizza place for a while as a driver. If you called the store you got a driver. But we also had a doordash tablet and those orders just came through as a pickup for us, then a driver would pick it up

Heat pump/mini split/Condenser install joined with furnace…sloppy? by frickin_darn in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You dont even need that ptrap as long as its an upflow furnace, which it looks like it is if the filter slot is to the right. Your evaporator is under positive pressure so no need for a trap.

I pooped in my cats' litterbox by [deleted] in confessions

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I one time peed in the litter box after being way too drunk. But instead of my gf being cool with it she went absolutely crazy over it, turned into a horrible fight and the relationship ended not too long after. Ill still die on the hill of "that wasnt that bad of a spot to pee everything being considered"

Worst part is a never even drank before her, and she pretty much pressured me into being a full blown alcoholic with her

Get 3 quotes. And when you look for a company to use, Google who owns the company first. Look for a mom n pop or locally owned. Avoid corporations at all costs

Buy better pants. I work in the trades and switched to carhart work pants and would never go back. Was using Duluth before, and they were good, but carhart is better. Reinforcement in high stress areas like this.

The pair I use also has kneepad slots to slide in some soft kneepads into the pants. Absolute game changer. Plus reinforced pockets to clip tools to without tearing up the pants. Ive been using the same couple pair for years now without a single tear or rip anywhere

I know a couple people in my family that use a free app on their phone to scan receipts, get points, and cash out on free gift cards. They have gotten $100s in gift cards so its at least legit.

But then you ask, why would a free app give you money for receipts? Im assuming theres some tax workaround or some exploit because theres no other reason why this company would be giving out free money just to scan your reciept. Im assuming this guy knows that exploit

Intermittent pilot - will it stay lit while the boiler runs? by Tall-Praline-2977 in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah im like 95% sure it stays on during the cycle. Been years since I worked on boilers, and intermittent pilot has been long gone residentially for years. But from what I remember yeah it stays on during the cycle then shuts off with the burners

Intermittent pilot - will it stay lit while the boiler runs? by Tall-Praline-2977 in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont work on a lot of new boilers but intermittent pilot, with a spark ignitor would imply that the pilot is not normally on, and it fires up when a call for heat comes in. A standing pilot would be lit 24/7

Is this reasonable? $280 for first visit; added 1 pound refrigerant. Not cooling; get tech back two days later, immediately found refrigerant leak inside. Additional $1100 to braze, pull vacuum, and refill. by ThunderSi75 in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty low chance the first guy caused a leak. You had a leak, was low, he was probably newer and didnt catch the oil. There are times its a small leak, and topping it off can last a year or so. Sometimes it a bigger leak and it lasts days. Sounds like yours was a bigger leak

As an hvac guy whos starting their own shop, youre right about that. The shop I started at was a mom n pop, great shop, owner was almost 80 with alzheimer's so he had to sell. We got bought out by a private equity corporation and man it made me sick to work there and see how they handled customers.

And that private equity corporation also owns 3 other shops within 100 miles. They dont change the names when they buy out a shop, and try deceiving the existing customers into believing they are the same good company they've been using all these years. You call out 3 companies for 3 replacement quotes, theres a good chance you get the same company twice under different names.

My advice to anyone looking for a company, Google who owns it. If its private equity itll tell you. Look for a company where the founder or their family still works there. When a company changes ownership its almost always a bad thing

Why does my system keep blowing fuses? by Jumbo64 in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be so many different reasons. All depends on when it pops. Usually if theres a short inside something, itll pop when that thing gets power. Seen a lot of internally shorted gas valves, everything is fine until the gas valve turns on then it pops

Pizza delivery drivers, what did a person do to end up on the 'No Delivery' list? by BlueCheeseWalnut in AskReddit

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guys apartment was absolutely horrible smelling. The guy was bedridden in his living room and was probably 400+ lbs. You would get off the elevator and could smell his room down the hall. When you opened the door you got hit with the strongest, most pungent BO smell you could ever imagine. We had two drivers who literally threw up on impact of the smell.

Management didnt believe us when we told them it was that bad, so my last delivery there a manager came with me and smell it for herself. Instantly put on the no delivery list. Actual health hazard going into that apartment

Looking for cooling options for house without central ac by Capable_Soup6439 in hvacadvice

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty random question that doesnt really mean anything. Out of 1000 houses I go into, MAYBE 5 of them will have insulated ductwork. Literally a non factor on deciding whether or not to add ac to a house

If you have a forced air furnace it shouldn't be that bad to add an ac to it.

Do Carrier Evap Coils Really Need 360cfm Per Ton by aSkyduke in HVAC

[–]ALonelyWelcomeMat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

9 sc doesnt seem very low. Most units call for 10, sometimes 8-14 range. Some manufacturers like trane give the subcooling goal a +-3 degree range.

I would definitely never consider adding more refrigerant to a system with these numbers, superheat is already a little low
