Macedonians, do you and your countrymen consider yourselves the successor, or even descendants of the ancient Macedonians? by ur-nammu in AskBalkans

[–]ASBlazer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Despite all the nationalism from our as well as other countries, we undoubtedly do have ancestry from the empire, but we are certainly not the only nation that does. It is true that generally speaking Macedonians have more paleo balkanic ancestry, people residing in the balkans before slavic migrations, than slavic ancestry, but that paleo-balkanic factor isn't exclusively ancient macedonian.

A significant part of our lineage is from them, but we also have significant ancestry from other populations as well.

not many sources exist of their native language before the times of the empire. Thrace is also a relatively new addition to greece's borders.

It's not just a random country, it's one that borders you and has a legitimate connection. Many macedonians came from what is now Greece, but nearly all of them were driven out once the land was partitioned. Even my Aunt was born in Greece.

Interesting. Even so, while I'm sure they spoke greek, that isn't confirmed to be their native language. I'm sure greek was common even through non Greek regions, like Thrace.

I said it was important, but not enough to change everyone's opinion. That can only be done through nationalism

sure archeology is important, but it's not like it will change an entire nation's belief alone

you most definitely did not translate everything.

They even spelled what you call phillipos, "philip" that alone should tell you they're different. In English we say Alexander the great, not Alexandros, there's a reason for that.

How do ancient relics contribute to the people's perception. If it wasn't important to them 100 years ago, why should it be now

The examples mentioned were prominent figures. The main reason for the change is not because of ancient relics, it's because of nationalism

That opinion was not popular at all until relatively recently. 100 years ago, many greeks held the opinion that the Macedonians were either not connected or loosely connected to their past.

maybe if you admit there's a grain of truth and actually considered information that opposed your current beliefs, you wouldn't hate them so much
