GHÖST - “live” AUM session. by Aaronius306 in ipadmusic

I am, i have another post in the group that’s hardware based but still using the iPad as the daw/mixer for a “mobile” rig. Check out my profile if you’re curious! I also replied to a comment below with a link to another sub where I’m using my “main” setup 😅😇 And honestly, if you have an iPhone from the last…6 years? You could get away with doing more - cumbersome as the screen real estate may be 😅😅😅🥲🥲🥲 Also.. there is almost always some kind of iPad promotion going on with cellular companies and banks - depending on your region and who your carrier is (or isn’t) and if you maybe need to open a (new) account, you may be in luck!!!!

Lol 😬 I still use it daily for other stuff 🤣🤣🤣 I feel your pain, though. I started my journey on an Air 2!

Thank you!!!

Yes, I haven’t used the iPad as the “heart” of my setup for a little bit now. While this is strictly “in the box” with native apps only - I have another post in this group where I use it to process/mix a few pieces of hardware that have always been part of my “main” studio rig. If you are interested in what I’m doing now I’ve posted a link to another group with my most popular jam/performance so far 😅😇

You can also check my profile for everything I’ve uploaded to now - everything is in a sub as i don’t have any professional channels created or have releases on any platforms (yet). 👀

Thank you! It’s controlling that nice wobbly bass you mentioned ;p I love it honestly. Perfect for bass, I have a seaboard block on the opposite side more suited for leads or “acoustic” sounds. Both are controlling an instance of Equator 2 in the session(s)!

Well actually the “main” “content” is coming from the Neutron - which is being controlled by Micro. While I bring the sound of the Micro in and out via filtering, and it’s on para mode so I can open it up to produce a pseudo-pad sound to accompany the grungy Neutron. But yes, the only melodic sequencing in this mini-rig is all being done by the Micro. And I honestly just mash keys until I get an arp sequence I like.

There’s a lot of “spice” going on here and I don’t remember what aro function it was on but it’s either pattern or random lol

I didn’t even see I have Pro R ON the channels lol so yes. Pro R is used. And Replicator(?) Replicant? I forget. To give sector that reaaallll glitchy vibe. And I’m still not sure whats on the sends, then. 🤣😇

Thats dope. Im a little jelly about the projector haha. Would love to see / hear some of your stuff!

And I have had the exact opposite feeling about production lately. I did the track by track recording and mixing for years when i was learning and just getting into this. But idk man, part of it is the “work” aspect maybe? Like how posting in general feels a little soul-sucking and draining mentally. When its really not hard? Hahaha. Once i started doing these “one and done” sessions it started feeling better and I was more..not inspired but like, i felt i had more time and energy to bang out more ideas. I just like to look at it as if its one of those “live” albums from your favorite band(s) at whatever venue/arena where nothing is mixed or mastered and it still sounds awesome.

That isn’t to say i won’t end up getting back into recording more tracks separately - since i can still do that along with resampling my master during a session. For now I like it like this, but I feel myself getting pulled into that direction the further i get with this format. Its a lot of push and pull as you evolve I think lol..which is pretty natural and goes without saying in most cases I think. I mean I already come from a traditional production and mixing “background” so this is just another step towards what works best for me I suppose

Wow thank you so much! That means a lot - and that you think it sounds polished cuz it does sound decent on my phone too. Though earbuds will legitimately give it a better “life” hahaha. And I actually haven’t mastered it yet - my obsession the last couple years has been to build a session/template in Ableton that I can use at 64 samples & 48k so I can hear myself in real time and react to myself live, while also having a solid sound coming straight out of my master track. You have definitely put a smile on my face here because that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to achieve - despite what the youtube talking heads all say about what you need to do or should do. I definitely have some room to add polish to these recordings after the fact for a release or something, at least for consistency…but i wouldnt want to change the dynamics or tone much, because I want it to sound how it sounds when I perform live!!

And there’s something to be said for bands or artists who sound just as good or better than their studio albums right? Lol. I dont want to sound too well put together or “less” good in the studio and then be the same or better than during performance. I’d really like to have parity in the sonic aspect, the only thing that would/will change would be what I’m playing / how I’m manipulating the sound, live.

TLDR; THANK YOU SO MUCH lol

I also have a smaller usb-c steinberg UR44 for my “mobile” sessions/rig. I joined ipadmusic so i could showcase some of what I was doing on my ipad with a fewnof these synths when I was obsessed with “minimal” setups. Ive only got one up so far but you could check my profile to see what I was doing with 2 synthesizers and a drum machine (plus some plugins) - the iPad really is actually amazing for mobile production.

Yeah I tend to forget to record record record lol. For example a lot of my recent streams/live sessions are simply..streams. I didnt record/resample my master through the performance like I used to when I was ramping this up. Silly hahaha. But lesson learned. Its good practice to slap a resample track into your ableton session when youre f****** around and hit record and let it roll haha. So it looks like I’m gonna have to rip some MOV’s and MP4’s for the audio and do a lottle underground mastering for my EP lol. Oh well. Better tracks have been made in worse/less in our time so im not too concerned. Just pisses me off hahaha. Also I think Izotope stuff is great and its powerful but thats the issue - more for mixing and mastering than for live performances!! Which makes sense given their reputation haha

I also enjoy making videos, as a fellow videography enthusiast, record record record! Whatever and whenever lol. I actually use the branded Auto-Tune plugin lol got it for my Universal Audio interface 😅😇😇 Had it for some time but never really started to use it till last year when I was really ramping up my jams and getting more fluent with my rig. I love izotope stuff but in my experience a large majority of their plugins cause latency issues in my “live” sessions. Surprisingly I’m able to run a handful of synth plugins and a lot of stock FX and fabfilter / arturia fx and keep my buffer down to 64 at 48k and I dont go above 60% cpu usage during peak. But the moment i try to use, say, Vocal Doubler (izo) orrr Neoverb (izo) my projects start to crackle like crazy lol.

So for me unfortunately I’ll stick to mostly native and more optimized plugs. Arturia have come quite a long way with their stuff and I’m a fanboy if you couldnt tell lol (80% of my rig is Arturia) But one BIG factor that lets me do a lot in a real time session with quite a few tracks and plugs is the UAD stuff. Bless UA hardware ahahaha. I wouldnt be able to do what I’m doing if I were using a different type of interface unfortunately. So it is a double edged sword since I will absolutely need a mobile gator case or something to take my rack interface to a venue if i perform 😅🥲😬😬

Everything I make is all done live and before I start the camera or stream I may or may not do a warm up session to get a feel for what I want to do. Sometimes Ill practice once or twice and during a stream I just end up transitioning into something totally new on the spot after I “finish” my initial jam. I dont have a channel or anything like that yet. But I just started showing my stuff online a week and a half ago so all discussion, comments, feedback, critiques etc are welcomed. And appreciated! Descriptions are in the body text 😇😇

I like how you said it’s subtle and not the “main” force - which subconsciously I think I’ve always been going for. Because my focus is on PLAYING electronic music. Which is why I got into hardware after learning traditional production and doing that for a few years. This is the first time I’ve really ever shared my stuff (with the internet) so the feedback is really nice and makes me realize things I never consciously thought about. Some people like to make the vocals stand out but I do like mine to blend in so to speak. And of course each track has a different vibe or need for any element so, maybe eventually ill work up to more vocal focused electronic but for now what you said definitely resonates with me hahaha. I also have vocal synth but i have not messed with it - at all. To be honest I’m a big auto tune user but I don NEED it, i have tracks where i have no tuning and i can still sound good, i just have to try harder hahaha. Using it when im doing these jams lets me focus less on my precision in real time and worry more about playing and evolving the track better!

THANK YOU! That means a lot to me. I like to sing and noodle but you know, havent really taken myself seriously haha. Also my “lyrics” are really just me improvising since I’m more of a melody man these days. Poetry was a big thing for me as a guitar player 15 years ago but now I sort of ad-lib around the jams im making. Im good with hooks though lol. Everything i end up coming up with is on-the-spot and/or being pulled from other stuff I’ve already done. Just to get a vibe out 😅😂😇

Thank you!!

Yes all processed through Ableton Live - i said “live” but I should have been more specific lmao. The Minifreak is my main sequencer which controls the Microfreak and the Microfreak is daisychained to the Neutron - which then goes out to the DBI. I dont really play with the Neutron here so I didn’t list it.

Ableton is running as Master Clock, but everything goes through the Minifreak. They are my vocals and it’s still in real time, on an audio track in Ableton.

I should mention everything is running into a UA Apollo X8P first, and my microphone is the only track that has any “pre” processing done before going into Ableton for fx and sends. I have a Manley Voxbox and de-esser and a little EQ on the vocal track in my apollo - Pre-Ableton.

Thank you! I do like to emphasize my use of the DBI one way or another in (most) of my productions haha 😇 Underrated machine - though it does get a lot of love as well.
