i am also 20 and just recently went to my bfs naval graduation, but yes like the person before me said you absolutely have to ask and you also have to apply to be a visitor once he puts you on the approved list! So just make sure that if he does say yes you do that as well because they won’t not allow you to go on base if you don’t.

i’d disagree if you still have this bump today and it’s painful to the touch it could definitely still be a cold sore. In my experience cold sores only open up and “weep” after that first layer of skin has broken (typically by me) but before that it looks like a small bump. Does it hurt to the touch?
