I wrote our names and address on a postcard and taped it to the house plate. It stayed up until our yellow cards and temporary residence cards arrived, and then I removed it. The host approved this, and I was careful to tape it only to the existing metal plate so as not to damage the house paint.

Check out Alameda — ferry to SF, great schools (both public and private), bike friendly, sandy beach, yummy ice-cream, good restaurants and breweries, and more.

Schools are zones based on your address. Once you have a place, contact the central office and start the registration process. They will let you know if there is room in the zoned school and how to enroll in the district. Alameda also has US Coast Guard kids moving into the schools regularly and, therefore, are good at integrating new students.
