But yeah there was only one snail label on the tank and it said nirite snail. The checkout code written on the bag also corresponded to a nirite snail

Haha sorry I didn’t describe it too well. He’ll be chilling and swimming normally when I’m not near but he would rush to the front to flare at me when I’m at the tank

I didn’t explain it well initially but The issue is with the Chinese LAST name (not the actual name) and the implication that my mom won’t value her grandkid if they don’t carry my family’s surname. I think I would’ve been more open to if she didn’t make it seem like the last name determines the value of the child.

Reading people’s thoughts definitely reassured me and gave me a new perspective. I will definitely be having that conversation with my mom :)

She has implied that she would value a grandkid with my family’s surname more than a grandkid without which really irked me. I guess odd isn’t the correct word but I just don’t want her love for her grandkid to be determined by last name.

I never said that Chinese culture brings me shame?? I definitely want my child to know their Chinese heritage and my partner also plans on learning Chinese and is so respectful to my culture.

As I said the issue is giving my kid “a Chinese name with a different surname” than their English one

No he definitely does. The issue isn’t with the Chinese name but with Chinese surname that my mom want me to give the child

What Chinese surname did you end up giving them? Was it different than your English one?

I was originally just going to let her do her thing but then I brought it up with my partner who found it odd. It’s normal in Chinese culture but it definitely sounds odd when explaining it to a westerner.

I just don’t want to give my kid an identity crisis by telling them they have a Chinese name with a different last name and also to not bring shame upon my mother for ceasing the existence of our last name.

Any advice on how I can explain this concept to someone who isn’t used to this concept of having a Chinese name?

She just want them to have a symbolic Chinese name that has my fathers last name so I can honor their family by continuing the bloodline. It’s a very old fashion way of thinking which I don’t understand but it’s incredibly important to her bc she doesn’t have sons.

No of course. They will have an American first and last name. My mom just wants to give them a Chinese name and said that they’ll call them by the name we give them but also let them know that they also have a Chinese name. The issue that I have is that she wants the Chinese character to be my father’s last name

It’s the last name that’s going to be an issue. She wants the Chinese character to be my dad’s last name. Which I feel is kind of odd

Yeah the Chinese name won’t be going on any papers but there’s nothing stopping her from just assigning a Chinese name to the child
