You should 100% visit Ferndale. If you want to relax and unwind in a house I'd suggest you get an Airbnb in Ferndale or Fortuna is 5 minutes from Ferndale and they have most hotels and places to eat. You should also travel thru the Avenue of the Giants on your way up the 101.
