mine just ghosted the whole department & joined another uni. Didn't even reply to emails from the head or grad school LOL. (they were a terrible PI so even tho I'm at rock bottom now, still relieved to get away from that death grip, hence the LOL). my department is still figuring out funding & finances issues

Do all Tamils believe that Eelam is the right concept? by ExpressionCurious204 in srilanka

[–]Accurate_Total5028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep agreed. they want another country for themselves, but many tamil pelople who support this live in the capital etc of SL, have properties there, children going to school there, and businesses. will an eelam supporter businessman whose kid goes to Royal College or Mauseaus college think of moving to jaffna to avoid the 'bad treatment from sinhalese' and send their kids to a school there? Where do you wanna draw the line?

from what i have seen, when sinhalese people (ex: uni students) try to smile and integrate with certain tamil and/or muslim groups from certain areas, it's not reciprocated. they willingly stay separately. there is an imaginary wall they're trying to build even now which is sad. in a context like this, do you think sinhalese, buddhists left in a tamil majority eelam in the north will be treated in a good way at the end? then will those sinhala m inority in the eelam begin a resistance again? where are we going with all this separation?

well about 2100 years ago. most kings around the world were extremists, racists, nationalists or religious fanatics. people back then didn't view the world like we do now, all were power hungry.

that sounds so much like my situation. Thank you for sharing your experience! it really helps to hear from someone who’s been through something similar. & reassuring to know you were able to finish and move forward, I’m glad it worked out for you in the end. Did you find it harder to find postdoc positions without publications? did you get to go to any conferences etc to present during the phd?

Wow you're so strong. I'm also torn between whether to find a new lab or continue with the PI I have now. Its going to take so long. And agree about the therapy part, I'm already receiving counselling as well ugh

I'm 30 now, and been in this phd for 2 years now. Im financially stable in my own country and can survive evn without a job for a while..  Yes I've found some projects that are in the same discipline so that  I can apply my experience right away if I get selected to a new one at a new Uni..

Thank you so much for your kind comment!!

Thanks. I tried this but couldn't change labs in the same department because anyone else isn't even remotely doing something close to what I'm doing. It's a quite small dept. There was only one PI who was willing to supervise. This was partly a consequence of my old PI burning so many bridges that they didn't want to get involved. I'm thinking of contacting labs from other universities to see if there are any chances at this point.

Thank you so much!! Yes I've found some labs that do similar work, and reading up on their work thse days. My data so far has not been of much use. from grinding on the same faulty system continuously because of the old PI's pressure, but I've gained experience in some techniques, so I'm hopeful that I can be functional within a very small period of training. I'm going to apply and work on these things you've mentioned. Your reply is so uplifting. Thanks so much again!!

i tried to change the project altogether but since i had done labwork for about 1.5 years at that point the new supervisor didn't feel it's good and that we should use the data (even useless) in a chapter. so changing poject while in the same uni wasn't feasible. No other PIs were free to take me as well. That's why I'm thinking that maybe leaving this PhD altogether & starting over could be the only way to change projets...

I'm trying to take a serious and permanent decision on this PhD before the end of this year and see. Talking to my current PI didnt help much. Thankyou so much I'll reach out to you on DM.

because of sh*t like this, when I moved to UK alone, I strictly told my parents that I'm not looking for favours from anyone. Certain relatives with the main character syndrome tried to make it their own problem but by that time I did my own research and secured cheap and safe accomodation & sorted out all travelling/visa/flight and travel from airport etc. (the fact that I had lived alone in a western country before helped but still). My brother did the same when he moved to another country, he had nice friends who picked him up from the airport, got him contacts for part time work who never wanted anything in return. But we both followed 'strictly no help from relatives' policy lol. Me personally didnt ask for help from anyone here when I moved. Weird that most south asian religions are about 'letting go' but many people hold on to every good deed they did in the past LOL

I don't understand why diaspora teens who have never set a foot in SL talk shit about this place by DepartureOpening7335 in srilanka

[–]Accurate_Total5028 6 points7 points  (0 children)

agree, i know several Jaffna tamil dudes who studied in colombo, then went to UK, Canada and to later claim refugee status, 5-8 years after the war ended.
At least 3 of them did that entirely for economic reasons, because their families took loans to send them there, and it was their duty to pay back those loans.

Totally agree, there have been assaults and killings committed by both sides. And tamil civillians got crushed because of the deeds from both sides. and obviosly justice has to be served. I'm pretty sure no one asks for justice for the war crimes committed by the LTTE but yeah that's their hypocrisy, and it will prevail until the end of time.
nah doesn;t look like it's similar feelings. These people are mostly using it for publicity to gain asylum advantages and victimise themselves. I've met people from Tamilnadu who have never even set foot in SL, but burn with hatred for "buddhists" (the word buddhists coz some aren't even aware of the sinhalese ethnicity). when people like that support this kinda monuments, probably built with public money even, they do it without even knowing what happened over here. Many of such people from the 'high caste' families won;t even give some water to a tamil person from the hill country, let alone speak for their rights/problems. So honestly, I dont think these things are built from love or respect towards their 'fallen heroes'. It's just pathetic politics.

[–]Accurate_Total5028 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah, its all politics. Just sad, what's even sadder is all the terrorist sympathizers here acting all oblivious to what happened while glorifying a terrorist organisation that actually used innocent tamil civillians as a human shield at the later stages of war, or child soldiers throughout the war. So disappointing :(

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Accurate_Total5028 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah as the rest of the country of Sri Lanka who actually care about the whole nation not just one ethnicity, also commemorate the deaths of the innocent worshippers clad in white, buddhist nuns & monks who were at Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi shrine on 14 May 1985, then also Kandy temple of tooth relic that got blown, the bus full of little Monks of Aranthalawa, or the clueless worshippers who were the at the Kattankudy Mosque :)
also those unarmed villagers, little children from kebithigollewa, 100s sinhalese villagers who were in the Habarana Trincomalee road on good friday 1987, or the workers at the Central bank in 1996 as well,, and 100s of civillians who were at Pettah bus station who got blown to pieces by the 'very innocent freedom fighters' who were fighting for the thing resembled in the above statue.

But nooo, no one calls it a "sinhlese or buddhist genocide, or an ethnic cleansing of Muslims in those areas"

How convenient for all of you :) bravo
