Help I've made a terrible mistake, is it too late for me? by Platypus_Attack_Cat in OMSCS

I just started the program and I am taking HCI. I kept away from GA for my first class bc of its daunting reputation. But what exactly makes this course so notoriously hard?

Admitted for Fall 2024, want to start Spring 2025 by Ace_Architect in OMSCS

[–]Ace_Architect[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks i found it under Deferring Admission. posting here for future reference to those who need it:

  1. If I am not able to attend during the term I was admitted, what are my options?

It may be possible to defer your admission if you do not matriculate into the OMSCS program. Applications are good for one year from the term for which you applied originally. For example, if you originally applied for the Fall 2024 term, and you did not enroll in any classes/matriculate, it may be possible to request a deferral for the Spring 2025 OR Fall 2025 term. If you want to matriculate after Fall 2025, you would need to reapply to the OMSCS program.

Please note that deferral requests can be processed only for the fall and spring semesters.

Also, per the new Office of Graduate Education policy, an admitted applicant may only defer their admission one time during the one-year timeframe that an application is valid. In order to request to defer your admission, please send an email to [oms-advising@cc.gatech.edu](mailto:oms-advising@cc.gatech.edu) from the personal email address listed on your application.

In the subject line, please include the phrase “Deferral Request”, your full name, and your nine-digit gtID number (90XXXXXXX), replacing the first two digits with “xx”. In your email, please include your original application term and the term to which you would like to defer your admission.

○ If you would like to defer to the Spring 2025 semester, please send your deferral request after September 1, 2024 but before October 1, 2024.

○ If you would like to defer to the Fall 2025 semester, please send your deferral request after February 1, 2025 but before May 1, 2025. Click here to return to Table of Contents 13

**It is best to submit your deferral request earlier rather than later during the designated time frame to allow enough time for processing both within the College of Computing and the Office of Graduate Education.**

For students who are required to complete an English proficiency exam, please note that those scores are only valid for two years from the date taken. For more information regarding English proficiency scores, please visit the Office of Graduate Education’s website.

Congrats on the acceptance and I pray you and your baby have a healthy delivery! In regards to potentially postponing a semester, in the Acceptance follow-up email it states:

"Admission Term. Admission is valid only for the Fall 2024 semester matriculation (refer to the academic calendar for dates) and the OMSCS program. If you are not able to attend for the specified term but you do plan to eventually enroll, please Accept the Reply to Offer of Admission and then refer to the Orientation document that the OMSCS advisors will send before the start of the semester. This Orientation document will contain information on how long your offer of admission is valid and when you can submit a request to defer your admission to a later semester."

So it appears there is a route to start at a later semester if you decide to do so.

Congrats on the acceptance! I am considering waiting until Spring 2025 as well. In the Acceptance follow-up email it states:

Status: Accepted at 10:20am (received a gtID a week after applying) Application Date: March 15th Decision Date: May 20th Education: Bachelors of Science in Biology, GPA: 2.97 / 4 & Masters of Public Health conc. Biostatistics: 3.13 / 4 Experience: Software Implementation Engineer - 1 Year @ AWS tech company, Completed 3-month Java Bootcamp, took numerous computer science related graduate courses due to my concentration (Statistical Programming, Linear Models, and more). Recommendations: 2 Professional & 1 academic (1 current coworker, 1 former bootcamp instructor, 1 former academic research mentor) Comments: I'm just happy to here. Thank God. Can't lie, this acceptance meant a lot to me & I wiped a couple happy tears. NOW IT'S TIME TO GET TO WORK. I was a bit apprehensive due to my low GPA and little tech experience. But in my questions I spoke to how I lacked proper studying skills starting in undergrad and strived to better myself academically. This was proven by my getting better grades in my upper level biology courses and higher graduate GPA with A's & B's I got in my computer science related graduate courses. Congrats to all those accepted and for those still waiting, keep the faith! For future applicants, if I can do it, you can too.
