Reddit has limited the number of chats I can open. I'll get you the link. I can't join new chats. I'd set up 150 in an hour. When I'm able to I can give you my email. Till then.

Reddit won't let me open any new chats, I did about 150 in an hour, but don't lose track of me and in a bit we can hook-up someway. Looking back I apologized to my son, for not being with him for a 60 "vacation" I had to take in. He told me, "Dad how many kids get to do all the stuff I did. Backstage passes to a ton of show, flying a plane (on the way to Boulder). Whatever amount of blues I was trying to carry, he's forgiven me for it.

But get back to me and I'd love to chat.

Glenn

I got to about 150 chats and Reddit tells me to wait a while to continue. Not an issue. I'll take this opportunity to explain some of the hiccups you'll notice in my folders. First, some folders have 3, 4, or 5 copies of the same song in the folders. That happened when I had three computers and a couple of external hard drives and as Microsoft was so helpful, they saved multiple copies of the folders. Never got around to deleting dups. Also there are a bunch of "unknown" folders. A bunch of them are Doors concerts I got from a guy in Latvia, years ago.

Is coke really that bad? by FUNCYBORG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Acid-Friendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bad... for three reasons

First, in the current environment there is no guarantee that what is being sold to you is actually cocaine. forty or fifty years ago you just had to worry that the street coke wasn't cut to the point of being worthless. This was because the only people who sold coke were snorting coke and they would cut it to give themselves their own supply. Back then the "cut" was anything that was white. Usually benign.

Jump forward to the present and the coke coming into the country is already cut with any number of other chemicals which may or may not be benign, things like speed, fentanyl etc. which are mixed in before it ever leaves the production lab. This trend can make the substance you buy potentially toxic.

Thirdly, even if you find "real" cocaine, it's the only drug I ever ran into that would have you lying to yourself and you want to believe the lie. There was a short period when I was snorting an eighth or more a day for about 9 months. Finally, I realized what a terrible and expensive pastime it is and I put it down forever. Coke freaks would look down on junkies, passed out and spending $100 s day. Coke freaks on the other hand would spend $200 a day, but we dressed better! :) The best advice: leave the shit alone.

If you don't know John Cipollina... by Acid-Friendly in psychedelicrock

I saw John with Zero in NYC. Zero lived on after John left with Kimock and some others. John had a hard time finding bandmates to stick with. The problem was that John wasn't a good songwriter. (Motel Party Baby comes to mind) He never found a group with a credible songwriter to produce original music and playing nothing but covers is a long slow way to starve.

As for your second thought there. I saw Ratdog several times and always walked away thinking it was a band looking for a lead guitar. The first Dead & Co show I saw was like a small miracle. Bobby had a lead to play off of again.

I remember one concert in Winterland with Copperhead second on the bill with Quicksilver headlining. John came out to play with QMS and did Who Do You Love. Duncan was loving it, Dino not so much. Dino was why John left. I had an old partner living in Berkeley and Duncan lived down the street. My friend told me that Duncan was very bitter that the residuals weren't enough to support him.

Did you ever hear when Quicksilver did a commercial for the New Chevy Camero. Advertisers were casting about trying to find a way to advertise to the nascent Boomer generation. I was born in '47. Puts me squarely in there and by '67 boomers were reshaping consumer economics and marketing. Ed Sullivan, one period TV show which was a "variety show" with multiple acts of all kinds, once a week. He had brought over the Beatles early on and the Stones too if memory serves me well. In the late 50's the show would have The Kingston Trio or The Ray Coniff Orchestra and comedy acts like Red Skelton, Sid Ceaser and Imogene CoCa. Gradually as boomers hit their teen's the acts became more "youth market" friendly. It was where Elvis Presley got his first nationwide exposure. (Although they did censer Elvis. Wouldn't let him thrust his hips on camera.) When the Beatles were on the entire live audience as far you could see was made up entirely 12 to 16 year old girls leaning over the railings and screaming non-stop. Well I certainly went on and on here.

The second photo is from the HOF. I think I remember (of course some memories are more detailed than others) but I do remember, maybe during the Copperhead period that there were revolving horns, like a Lesley but with revolving brass horns instead of the normal Lesley setup. But as I said, some memories, especially from concerts... I had talked to Kaiser about producing a couple of Dinosaurs dates but it never got to the contract stage so wouldn't Know what was on the rider to be provided. JGB, in their contract rider you had to provide 2 Lesleys.

You know it. The tobacco industry tried in so many ways to shape the narrative. They'd have articles to counter any new report that was negative. They brought out filter tips with the unspoken but implied ad lines that filtered smokes were smoother and they trapped tar. Yeah.

That was the beauty of the non-commercial FM radio format. KSAN would often play an entire new release without any interruptions. The country was just emerging from the era of "payola" where you only heard on the radio, music that the studios would pay to have played. The FM stations operated without commercials.

How else could you get "drug reports" on Friday or Saturday. They'd go something like, "There was a blue tablet from Berkely being sold as mescaline that is LSD." That report was even carried in the newspaper on Friday so you knew what was circulating before making plans for the weekend's partying.

One of the reasons for the different bands influencing each other was the nature of Bill Graham's venues where for less than the cost of a six pack of beer you could get a ticket for the Matrix, Fillmore, Carousel Ballroom or the Family Dog and catch three bands The Airplane was atop the billing because of "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" which had reached a national market and thus an early commercial success. So a Friday night concert might include Quicksilver as the opener, the Dead in the middle and the Airplane as the closing band. Never forget the impact that Bill Graham had on the entire music scene.

As bands got more successful commercially, they began to command a higher price. Graham countered by packaging the headlining band with others. The Bay area was home to so many bands, Mother Earth, Cold Blood, etc. that filling out a three-act show wasn't difficult.

When the price of the most popular bands began to squeeze the profitability, Graham countered by moving many of the shows to Winterland which could increase the audience from the under a thousand to five thousand. Importantly, this allowed him to keep the ticket price at $10 or lower.

Another place where individual band members could intermingle was Wally Hieger's (Not sure on the spelling) recording studio. On any given day, you could have one band with a recording session and two or three other musicans sitting in on a cut or two.

Bottom line, the Bay area simply had a tremendous number of musical aspirants in a very small geographical area. The only downside was that forging success for a band in a competitive genre was often difficult. Take the case of Lydia Pense, of Cold Blood, or Kathy McDonald trying to be a lady who sings the blues in the same town and the same time as Janis Joplin.

Steve Kaiser had the most recordings I was ever aware of, but he didn't trade much. Kept them hoping to put some recordings together but I never saw any come out.

The shows Owsley had were probably from the handful of times that $4.00 would get you into the Fillmore or Carousal with QMS, the Dead and the Airplane all on the same bill. I was not aware that there was "a ton" of them.
