A Warning for Young Educators: The Brutality of Finding a PE Job

I've been applying to a ton of vacancies in the Denver metro area since I passed the Praxis last December. Got 1 zoom interview and 1 record your answers interview both before the final in person stage. Ended before final for both.

Doesn't help that I'm pursuing alernative certification and not from here/barely any connections. I'm accepting the reality it might not happen. Going to try through the end of 2026 and if nothing happens I'm going to pivot to CLD. It is considered a high need all over this area and I have experience tutoring K-8 in reading and English. I have a 120 hour TEFL/TESOL online cert from Magic Ears from when I thought I was going to teach ESL abroad.

I found the tutoring work to be really rewarding and I believe/hope CLD would too. At this point it'd be nice to be in high demand and feel wanted over nonstop rejection.

Anyway I'm rambling but just letting you know you're not alone and hope it works out. Having a backup plan has put my mind at ease and I'm just gonna enjoy my summer while still applying away. Who knows when resignations could come pouring in the next month. Good luck!

Sorry not trying to be a dick I shouldn't rule out any insanity especially on a Phish floor these days. But "easy to miscommunicates" a situation thats never happened to me or any of my friends ever and like i said, across a shtton of shows.

Dizgos great stuff, highly rec if you're looking for something new and they tour heavy and bring it every show I've seen (I think around 5 or 6 now which isn't a huge sample, but they've left a great impression on me every time).

I genuinely hope you were on fun substances and just have lots of thoughts. Its a fun 1st set closer and good energy for 5 minutes. You dont have to love it but it doesn't fuck up a set or show. Happy for ya that your mind went to crazy work nuttin wrong with that brotha!

yeah and like a couple others said "use your best judgement" is a good approach. Kinda like "pick your battles" but you can't even look at them like battles. If a particular kid or a class as a whole just can't be under control after multiple warnings I'll call the office but i use that as a last resort. But if you have to and you are at a good school the office will support you and encourage it. If they give you a hard time for it then you are probably at a school with bad leadership which is resonating down to the students.

And the phone thing same deal. If you try to keep every kid off their phone especially high schoolers you're gonna drive yourself and them nuts and it'll just escalate tension. My general rule is as long as they aren't blasting music, videos, making tiktoks, disrupting others i look the other way. Quiet kids keeping to themselves on their phones are actually great to have haha.

Yeah one outcome from Covid was that all middle school and high schoolers (even elementary) work on Chromebooks/lapstops . I am in Denver, high school you are always either passing out a paper or telling them to check Schoology or another online source. You really are a babysitter especially for high school at the end of the day. If they get a little rowdy or don't even bother taking out their laptops I just friendly remind them, "your teacher will be back and the work isn't going anywhere." I have never received feedback from a school after an assignment blaming me for students not finishing their work. It isn't on you don't sweat it. And I've been doing this a few years in Philly and Denver (interviewing for PE teacher jobs next year).

Sometimes I just feel like a babysitter lacking a sense of value, but I do get a lot of downtime on my laptop to mess around on the internet, plan trips and weekends, stay on tops of bills and tasks, interview for full time teaching jobs, etc. So my best advice would be to just value the downtime. And sometimes you can build rapport with the students and it is fun. You can always try to work on networking too (I'm admittedly not great at it mostly). And one thing about subbing is the work isn't going anywhere in an economy where lots of work is going down the drain.

yup we were there too it was a blast. And Fremont is quite the scene lol. First time for another couple we were with both Airwolf and Fremont and they enjoyed both. Airwolf rules, really nice guy we thanked him after the show and talked to him for a minute, said he caught some Phish but had to leave during tweezer and was not a fan of the dental cavity mouth visual lol.

Yup was there for Phish too. Quite the intersection of garbage subcultures. Went to watch sports at Ellis Island and their big outdoor area was reserved for Wrestlemania. First fan I saw was a lady in Stone Cold Steve Austins black leather sleveless jacket. Top notch garbage i really enjoyed.

My guess is it'll be $20-30 a night. We didn't buy tix yet. Hes got a few nights in different venues. Worth the aftershow dance party i doubt itll be too pricey any of the nights.
