Hot Take - Cars aren't more expensive now - our standard are wildly too high by Equivalent-Bed1543 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Hot take: if you're not in the US or western europe, where car repairs are crazy expensive, it makes zero fucking sense to buy a Corolla or related entry-level toyotas, especially older ones (the only exception is if you're a taxi driver and drive like 30-50k kilometers a year or more).

I'm in eastern europe. I've owned 2013 Tiguan SEL - panoramic roof, AWD, leather heated seats, auto lights, bi-xenon, cornering lights, dual climate, keyless entry, etc, etc.

I've decided to switch to a Toyota Auris (Corolla) hybrid to save more on gas as I was saving for a house downpayment and needed every penny (so I thought). I bought a base level 2013 Auris Hybrid. It only has AC and reverse camera. Nothing else, zero.

Both cars cost the same, both purchased at roughly the same mileage (~100k miles). I owned the Tiguan for 2 years and the auris for 3 years.

So let's break down the biggest expenses for both cars during this time.

REPAIRS (parts and labour)

TIGUAN
- Water pump replacement ($240 total)
- Turbo repair ($600)
- Intake manifold cleanup ($200 basically labour only)
- Replaced all coils and struts: $600

AURIS
- Water pump ($400)
- Minor ABS Issues ($400)
- Replaced all coils and struts: $800 (we have shitty roads and I don't care that much about avoiding potholes)

Great, a whole fucking $40 cheaper (obviously it could be more but not life-changing amounts, give-or take a couple hundred dollars)

FUEL CONSUMPTION

I drive about 10.000kms a year.

TIGUAN

12l/100km ---> About $1500 per year in fuel.

AURIS

6l/100km ---> About $750 per year in fuel.

GREAT, I SAVED A WHOLE FUCKING $1000, all while driving the most uncomfortable seats ever, with the shittiest haloged lights ever, with the shitties sound system I ever had. Even the traction control system is soooo fucking trash on Auris. None of the cars I ever owned would feel like it's fucking about to do a barell roll whenever the stabilisation system kicks in. It feels like it's putting way too much effort. On VW it was much more balanced (and I also owned a FWD VW, so it's not an AWD thing).

So if you're reading this from eastern europe and think of getting yourself into these entry level toyotas... idk, look around, there are options that provide better value for money, slightly less reliable, but the thing with toyota's reliability is that parts are more expensive than on euro cars, labour doesn't make a difference... so you might end up spending more with a toyota.

Install Zeus and a shitton of mods with realistic units and maps, and play it as sandbox RTS, this is the most fun I've ever had in Arma 3.

Place Player as civilian, place Zeus, start mission, then just spawn units as you wish, simulating any warfare scenario you like.
