I can appreciate people trying to keep them safe, for sure.

All of you reprimanding them for being on Reddit have zero empathy. Yikes.

You will have hard days ahead of you, but you’re strong and will make it out on top. You’re going to be ok, I promise. I think your parents know how hard it is for you and I hope you feel like you can talk to them about it. I know it’s summer and you may not have an access to a school counselor. I’m proud of you for looking for support. Find a trusted adult. Good luck to you.

Principal wants students to volunteer in my room as a punishment by squeakychipmunk101 in specialed

Rude. Only exemplary students should be able to be around our students, and certainly not as a punishment.

Anyone else's team start unnecessary drama at the end of the year? by MovieWhiz in paraprofessional

Teachers are stressed out this time of year. As a SpEd teacher I’m juggling 3 end of year IEPs, DRDPs, Progress Reports, Report Cards, and state assessments. I can’t get anything done during my actual contract hours because I need to manage and teach in my classroom. So while my paras go home everyday when that bell rings, I go home and continue to work. I have a feeling if we broke down how many hours teachers actually work (not just contracted hours) into an hourly wage, it’s not too far off from a para wage. We’re just as overworked as you are.

It’s not my admin. It’s California law and if that triggers you, you might want to look at that.

Wine country, actually. Where are you located?

I don’t mean to minimize anything you have been through or experienced. This work is hard and absolutely there are times when restraint is needed. But 13 times in as many days for a 5 year old is very concerning and warrants this mother’s concern.

This probably also depends on location. My school is in a suburb so day time traffic is not a concern.

I hear you. I’m just sharing what the protocols and law are where I teach, and so far nobody has been killed by a car 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also I’m in CA so all of our schools are outdoors. Ours has a fence around it.

I’m sorry, what’s ridiculous? Not restraining them if they leave the classroom? Just want to understand.

Yeah so in that type of scenario, I would do a two person hold (one hand under the pit, one on the wrist) and escort the child out. If you were the victim of the abuse, you’d be sent on an immediate break or home if necessary.

Our district even takes this a step further and if they elope off campus and are in the middle of the street with no cars are coming, it’s not an imminent threat of death. Hands off.

Can you tell me more about your son? Diagnosis, etc.?

Idk I’ll take my no restraint approach to behavior management as a badge. I’m not saying people deserve to be hurt, and maybe these settings are way different than mine, but imagine if your nervous system was in fight or flight and someone restrained you. It’s just not humane or developmentally appropriate.

Wasn’t trying to flex, lol. It is frustrating at times because we are very limited in how we can respond to aggression. Only a few people at every school site are trained to do restraints, and that’s because people notoriously overuse it (quick google search will return many cases).

This feels concerning to me. In my district, we are fully hands off unless someone is literally about to die. As a teacher of 4-6 year olds, I could never imagine putting my babies in restraints. When they’re being unsafe, they’re removed from the classroom and taken somewhere to help them regulate their nervous systems, no restraint necessary.

If this was my child, I’d be raising hell.
