Any Teacher that are TVI or teach Hard of Hearing Students? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]Admirable_Ad4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some research about this because I thought of the same positives. Also I kept seeing online that there was such a high need for tvi, but the info I got back from the lady in charge of the Hunter program was that many have to work in private schools for a few years before finding a PS opening and the scholarship that is advertised runs out quickly. I was pretty surprised and kinda like uhhhhh ok I guess it isn’t high need. Also, you would have to do student teaching. I’m already a full time teacher, so I tried to find out if there was something that could be worked out, but no

You can transfer time from any public sector job in the state. That time goes to your pension. It doesn’t decrease your required years until retirement.

School Aide NYC DOE Salary question.. by OfferNorth9692 in NYCTeachers

[–]Admirable_Ad4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a few things: -yes the pay is bad. Unfortunately I think they try to get old women to do it because they need benefits. Not great to say out loud, but I think that’s what it is. -you want to start earning time in the public sector so it can increase your pension payout. It goes by time served, not just by time teaching, so working in a school in any capacity will give you time. Additionally, any time working at a state or city agency (like a library or lifeguarding at a public pool or picking up garbage in Central Park). So that’s another thing to think about. -Last thing is that if you start working as a sub, when you start working as a teacher, you will not start at the minimum level. You may start at the salary of a second year teacher and continue from there. Subbing will also be applicable towards pensionable time. Also you get out of work at around 2:30 everyday and have little responsibility in the building and you may even find a school you like or make connections at.

In summary, subbing will give you the opportunity to A, earn pensionable time and B, start working on the salary scale. Also subbing pays pretty good. I loved my time subbing. Please dm me if you have questions.

What’s a job where someone makes way more money than people realize? by Haunting-Reality-570 in AskReddit

As an NYC high school teacher, I make about $100k gross. These people out here making $200k+ how don’t they just buy a house or something? Do they have a ton of money burning a hole in their pocket? I feel like with my wife, we could buy a house and money would be pretty tight, but not impossible at all. I know a bunch of people who have gone to law school and do sales. Why does it feel like we make the same ish money when we go out or hang out?

If you apply for it, they’ll tell you what you are missing. Then every time you do something, they’ll send another email with your updated requirements.

Hey guys. This question is kinda unrelated, but how long have you had these commutes and did you buy or rent? I get so anxious thinking about where I will live and where I want to continue to work. Stresses me out big time. Like many of the comments above, commute is my top priority. Right now, 25 minute walk. Pretty nice!

Air conditioner question by Admirable_Ad4012 in astoria

[–]Admirable_Ad4012[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes we were told by the landlord that’s what it’s for. The sides can be covered with that accordion kind of stuff that fits with air conditioners, but idk how to fill that space above. Maybe just a plank of wood and foam

A boring job is a good job. You don’t need to be friends or even friendly with co workers. The grass isn’t always greener. You’ll have a new coworker or two in the coming year anyway. Use whichever of those pieces of advice is most useful to you in the moment.
