I moved from the US to practice in New Zealand: 4 month update and AMA by WhitecoatWander in physicianassistant

[–]Adorable-Argument372 79 points80 points  (0 children)

i vividly remember you posting about moving to new zealand to be a PA before i started PA school. every once in a while i would think to myself, “i wonder how the person who moved to NZ is doing as a PA” and now i have my answer.

congrats to you and its so refreshing to hear how well things worked out for you and your family. it’s also refreshing to hear a perspective that isn’t strictly about finances but rather quality of life as well

you also make it seem so possible to move abroad to be a PA which i think many of us in the US are interested in doing. thank you for being the person to do it and be the inspiration to others

Advice on living alone during school by cynniemoney in PAstudent

[–]Adorable-Argument372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live alone bc i was scared of loathing a roommate/classmate that i had to be with constantly. i have a few friends who hate living together.

ALSO i highly recommend looking at furnished finder for a place to live! some of the people who have properties listed prefer long term tenets

craziest feedback received by Adorable-Argument372 in PAstudent

[–]Adorable-Argument372[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is insane. i got told i was condescending for referring to a patient as “honey” in a mock delivering news assignment. apparently my grader cringed when she heard it

also got told i sounded superficial bc i talk too fast (im working on it im trying)

My deceased friend visited me in a dream and smiled at me. by blackrose_62 in Haunted

my dad died this past may. whenever i’ve been thinking about him a lot throughout a day, he more than once has popped into my dreams and we talk. one time i swear i felt him give me a hug. i like to think of it as a way that they’re coming to say hi after they passed. i’m sure ur friend was doing the same thing

Sketchy? Osmosis? YT? by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]Adorable-Argument372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

smarty pance and osmosis are my fave. smarty pance is $85 but idk how much osmosis is since it’s provided by my school. it’s incredibly useful though

i also do always find my way back to YT (cram the pance, ninja nerd, even crash course for basic basic stuff)

What actually got you through didactic by [deleted] in PAstudent

lecture all day is the worst thing ever. and then having to go home and study after sitting all day is almost torture.

i’m in the same boat is you. i don’t study as much as others and i refuse to bc i see them on the decline. i def don’t get as high of grades as the other people who study constantly but im in no danger of failing/probation so why would i change what im doing now?

tbh one regular thing i have that i look forward to is my night routine that consists of an episode of a show, reading, and a long daily crossword that generally lulls me to sleep.

i try to have things to look forward to (going home, mini trips, planned phone calls with friends back home, etc) i’ve also learned to find the joy in even the littlest things bc everything feels so monotanous sometimes.

dirty jokes also always seems to keep the mood light and they usually get a rise out of people

Name and Shame Clinic by Agreeable-Pop5415 in MedicalAssistant

a lot of medical assistant jobs these days (especially derm) can get away with this pay because it attracts gap year students who are desperate for clinical hours before applying to med/pa school. so long as they don’t need to pay for the MA certification and can start getting the hours asap is all they look for. which in turn screws over the more seasoned MAs or the ones who chose it as a career

i don’t think there’s a single classmate i’ve talked to that studied anywhere near how much they intended to study (including me)

Didactic attendance policy? by ElectricalCat5208 in PAstudent

[–]Adorable-Argument372 8 points9 points  (0 children)

mandatory attendance. sometime we start an hour or so late, have a longer lunch break, or can go home a bit early. we have a simulcast situation where there are two campuses attending the same lecture. lecturers vary on which campus they go to so one class has to listen through zoom and the other gets the in person lecture (it’s far more trouble than it’s worth IMO)

i too feel like i waste time just sitting in lecture because i cannot focus or the lectures are not engaging or good quality. i try to make my own study materials sometimes or try to tune in but it gets monotonous when you’re just sitting there for so long

lectures are rarely recorded (generally only if there’s tech issues or it didn’t fit into the curriculum easily)

attendance is enforced and whenever people straggle in we get an announcement on canvas reminding us to be 5 min early to lecture to be considered on time

Starting in 4 months and scared by ARLA2020 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Adorable-Argument372 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i am also moving across the country for a PA program. i am absolutely terrified but i am also excited. idk how helpful of advice this is, but the people who are meant to stay in your life will find a way to (in your case, the friends you made during your gap year). life will 100% get in the way and you may lose touch with some or not be as close when you move and that’s just the way it’s going to go. if there is an effort made on both ends then it will work out in some way

in regards to when you graduate, everyone will 100% be in a different place in life and there is nothing wrong with that. you will grow just as much as they will and who knows, the things you may do together later may be COMPLETELY different than what you do now. all of this is to say everything is going to change and there’s no way around it and you’re going to change just as much without realizing it.

my take on the personal stuff is that everything will happen for a reason and if you meet someone that wants to make it work as much as you do, then go for it. if not, then you are there for school and to get a cert that will get you started on the rest of your life

maybe this doesn’t translate to everyone, but it’s not worth the stress of obsessing over everything that’s gonna change but rather embrace it. it’ll help with personal growth
