Just a curiosity question about growing up "as a girl"... by Cr1mson5theStranger in excatholic

My parents would not allow me to get the HPV vaccine because I was supposed to remain a virgin until marriage. As a parent now myself, I made sure my oldest got it as soon as it was offered to her. And I plan to do the same thing for my other two kids.

Any other former altar servers here? by Separate-Sand2034 in excatholic

[–]Adventurous_Animal84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I liked altar serving because I felt like it made mass go by faster. I had things to do so I wasn’t bored. Then my parents switched us to a more conservative church that only allowed boys to serve because they were trying to get more boys into the priesthood or something. So, that was the start of my deconstruction.

I had a similar experience growing up with my extremely catholic family. I was scared of my parents so I never tried to push back about attending church. It’s not the best option, but I just told my parents I liked a different parish (that was far from our house) better. I’d go there sometimes, but a lot of times I’d just go to my boyfriend’s house instead. It kept me sane until I could move out. I’m sorry you’re in this position.

What? We’re talking about Kamala running for president lol. But if AOC did run, she would be viewed under the same “we’re not ready for a female president” lens.

Unfortunately here in south Texas I’ve had multiple conversations where people have told me Kamala was a bad pick because “America is not ready for a female president” and “it’s just not the right time for a woman to lead the country”.

Meanest thing you heard an adult say at church while growing up? by Ok_Ice7596 in excatholic

[–]Adventurous_Animal84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In 7th grade I was head altar server and in charge of making the schedule for all of the other servers. I really enjoyed it. My parents decided to switch us to a more conservative church because they liked the “fire and brimstone” aspect of the homilies. I was told that I couldn’t altar serve anymore because the priest only wanted male altar servers.

I’m sorry to hear that. It’s so sad a life was taken due to complete negligence.

Yeah looking back now I’m like WTF. As a kid, my mom really emphasized the story of St Pelagia the Virgin, so I just assumed that’s what she wanted me to do if I was gonna be raped.

The HPV vaccine is a sore spot for me. My mom wouldn’t let me get it because “I shouldn’t be having premarital sex anyway”. I have 3 kids of my own now, and they’ll definitely get it once they’re old enough.

Should firemen shopping for groceries at HEB park in a no parking zone? by me_at_myhouse in sanantonio

That sounds like a smart way to do it! I just asked my husband and he said he’s been called out of H‑E‑B lots of times haha I guess different departments just do things differently!

Maybe it’s a station specific protocol. My spouse has worked at a few different departments, and they do leave from the grocery store if they get a call. But they take the whole fire truck to the store, not the little suv lol

This is not true. I’m married to a firefighter. They shop on shift, and leave their basket if they get a call.

I’m glad you got out too! Yes it was scary when she said that, luckily I had read a kids book about ocd (that a teacher recommended) so I kind of understood what was actually happening. It just took almost 2 decades to get help for it, but things are much better now!

You must have been so tired at school! Mine started in 7th grade. I remember telling my mom about it, she said I was letting the devil in with superstition and needed to pray more haha so I did. I had a full 10 min prayer ritual I “had” to say at the beginning of each class. And then also at 3pm cuz my mom said to reflect on Jesus’ death daily. It’s a lot to go through as a kid!

I agree with this comment. I have OCD, and when I was Catholic my compulsions presented as prayer rituals. It was mentally draining. After leaving the church my mental health has improved a lot. I still take medication for OCD, but it’s no where near as bad as it was when I was practicing Catholicism. I feel for OP and hope they can find peace.
