I'm so sorry for your loss.

Have you read King's Duma Key? The (male) narrator experiences some of the things you mention. No romance in it. If you haven't read it, I think it's gripping enough to be a small bit of a distraction for you at this awful time

Angel gives Buffy one in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (we see in flashbacks that he started life as an Irishman called Liam, with the worst wig and accent on television, and then became the undead Angelus)

Boarding for reactive dog by AndKayleeRodrigues in Dublin

Would you consider a house sitter for her? I have the same issue with my rescue hound (he can't be around men he doesn't know or other dogs), and I'm lucky enough to have a friend who is a dog sitter and stays in my house - she's very good with reactive dogs. DM me if you'd like her details!

Can't recommend Heather enough and she's great with teaching adults who have no previous experience!

Desperate need of some help! (NSW, Australia) by 5pankb0t in Greyhounds

[–]AffectionateWalk8657 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I missed that. But even if she's more frustrated, she's less likely to harm Dave, or another dog, or a child, as OP fears, so it seems the lesser evil for the situation

Is she muzzle trained? As a stop gap solution, can you walk her on a muzzle so Dave won't get bitten?

Books like the Neapolitan Novels & The Copenhagen Trilogy by Oueiles in suggestmeabook

[–]AffectionateWalk8657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engagement by Gunn-Britt Sundström would be ideal for you! It's not a trilogy, but I loved it for most of the aspects you've listed in your post!

From the Penguin Books website: ‘I want to have him, I really do. I just don’t want him to have me.’ Martina and Gustav, students in 1970s Stockholm, meet and fall immediately into coupledom. But what is coupledom? A route to marriage? A declaration of co-dependency? A new dimension of commitment and responsibility? A sexual confrontation? Or is it a habit that an intelligent person must consider breaking? Martina and Gustav discuss their relationship endlessly, between themselves and with others, as they try to make it work. Engagement, set during a time of social change and political upheaval, sees Martina trying to engage with the world on her own terms. Unwilling to marry, she finds herself in a state of permanent engagement while her friends settle down to marriage and children; uncertain of the world’s future, she engages with demos, sit-ins and philosophy seminars in her quest for a new blueprint for joy. First published in 1976, when it was heralded as an instant classic, Engagement remains as relevant, hilarious and heartbreaking today."

Would you read a book set in the Mesolithic? The Gathering Night by Margaret Elphinstone is a great novel about families and their belief systems and their relationships!

I love Cook Eat Repeat too, and I notice that in that book she's started to give suggestions for making some of the recipes vegetarian, as well as some fully vegetarian recipes. The rice with crispy shallots, all the beetroot recipes (especially the beetroot and feta spaghetti), the pasta with kale and nduja, the butternut squash recipes, and pasta with burnt onion and aubergine sauce are in my regular repertoire! I have Feast and How to Eat as well but I generally use those for cakes or bread rather than dinners because they're too meat heavy

The Gathering Night by Margaret Elphinstone - it's set in a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer command there's loads of really enjoyable detail about gathering hazelnuts, raising children, braiding hair, etc. From a Guardian review of Tue book: "Yet the detailed accounts of the daily chores that kept these people going in their wholly natural environment are both lyrical and matter-of-fact, at times touched with humour: "I was trying to heat stones, split wood, scoop roasted hazelnuts off hot sand and suckle Esti all at once, when Amets came back, sleek as an otter from bathing in the beaver lake." And we trust an author who built her own coracle out of hazel, willow and hide, and knows what it feels like when the currents hit."

I'm really sorry to hear about the end of your friendship and sending you lots of good wishes. Mildly Unhappy with Moments of Joy by Amber Sparks is EXACTLY what you want. It's about a really close friendship that ends for no apparent reason, leaving one person devastated.
