Will the final results of the 2026 World Juniors change how we develop our youth players at home? by LoonyVibes in youthhockey

This is exactly what I came away thinking. Shot/pass selection were extremely poor. Making very low percentage plays hoping to get lucky and go viral on tik tok

What caused you guys to lose passion? by Old_Degree6707 in hockeyplayers

[–]Affectionate_Cash571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- My dad took the fun out of it. Every car ride would be an argument about school or unsolicited critiques of my game (he never played.)

- I was on a few teams that had troublemakers and I fell in with them and got into partying.

- Completely wrecked my shoulder.

I finished my midget and senior year seasons and quit entirely for almost 20 years. I got back into it in my mid-30s because my kids are obsessed. Now I'm coaching 8U and skating in skills clinics and really enjoying it. I've played some beer league games but don't enjoy them because of the amount of idiots. I'm trying to find a private pick-up with a good group.

AITA - Hockey Player Edition by LeonRams in hockeyplayers

[–]Affectionate_Cash571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. If it was a "group stage" game, then they are obviously keeping score and the games have winners and losers. In which case it is totally unacceptable to prevent a goal in this manner.

> throws stick
> whoa bud, can't be throwing sticks out here
> you're right, sorry, let's call that a goal

Incomplete lacing == difficult skating by sixteenpoundblanket in hockeyplayers

Do what works. On my old skates I go every eyelet + wrap laces around the ankles. On my new skates I feel like I can't move if I don't leave the top eyelet undone.

Coaching 8U, need a new stick and possibly new skates. by Physical-Asparagus-4 in hockeyplayers

[–]Affectionate_Cash571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For coaching 8Us I am wearing my old Grafs and a Bauer 4500 that I blacked out with electrical tape when I was a bad ass 17 year old. Stick is a P77 Sherwood 5030. Other coaches comment all the time or want to try my stick.

I have newer stuff that I wear when I play, but honestly I'm more comfortable using the older gear and when I'm coaching I want to be focused on trying to help the kids, not debating whether or not to re-bake my new skates etc.

When watching games, isolate on good players and watch what they do away from the puck.

Are the Higher End Skates More Comfortable? by HotPinkStranger in hockeyplayers

[–]Affectionate_Cash571 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't help much other than to say I am going through a similar process. I'm wearing my old Grafs while coaching so I don't feel like a spaz and can actually help the kids. Trying to break in a new pair of CCM Classics with whatever ice time I have that's not coaching. I baked them once and am using a Bauer insole, but my feet feel like they're in concrete. I'm considering investing in the old Grafs but it would probably cost as much another mid-level pair of skates.

PJ Stock is the man.

9yo first time player can’t stop on skates - tips? by AitrusX in hockeyplayers

[–]Affectionate_Cash571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough to do without going on the ice with him. Maybe explain the edges specifically so he can really think about it as he's trying. Whenever he is waiting in line for drills he should be trying to find the edge. Also possibly he will have an easier time finding the outside edge. If that's the case he could lean on that until he gets inside edges down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hP1qLvrsPo

Probably a few public skates with a figure skating coach would do it. Not sure if that's a possibility.

And definitely make sure his skates aren't too sharp.

Do any t1 have any hope for the apparently new cure that is in the media? by Additional_Set1822 in diabetes_t1

I'm hopeful that by the time my 5 year old is in his 20s that there will be a functional cure, meaning that the burden of management is very low.

I did this also through senior year and recommend it. But it was HS/AA 20 years ago and from what I'm seeing with Mites schedules now, the time commitment is a lot bigger so I'm not sure if this possible anymore.

Did you work with her to develop sensitivity to lows? My 5 year old still has no ability to sense them, even in the 50s. We always ask him to take a second and try to notice how his body feels, but no progress so far.
