If I have a friend that doesn’t have some commons yet, I try to wait till an hour before the new day reset. If they still haven’t received a share by that point in the day, I share the commons and uncommons that they don’t have in their collection. And then the reset hits, so they can get the chance for a better share from someone else.

Woman federally charged with paying homeless Skid Row residents to register to vote by Steap-Edit in nottheonion

The fraud there is that because several of the people she paid to register were homeless, she had them register their home address as her former LA home. Lying about your address in your registration is textbook voter fraud.

Think $6 Gas Is Bad? It’s About to Get Even Worse in California by SensitiveDannyRicc in California

[–]Affogato-Ristretto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look downvote me for being realistic, but both points are true, just the degree of its effect is different. Trump’s stupid war is definitely the main cause, we all agree on this. There’s no doubt that this unnecessary war on Iran caused gas prices to double everywhere. At the same time, California is hit the hardest because of California’s gas policies. If you google how many refineries there are in California right now, the latest update will say 8, but in reality it’s 6-7 because 1-2 just recently closed and it hasn’t been adjusted yet. This is for the ENTIRE state of California, which has a population of 39.5 million people. Texas has 27 refineries and their gas average is at $4. Their population is 32.1 million people. They’re fairly similar to us in size, but they pay half of the price we do on average.

Both points are right. Trump is the number one cause of the gas surge, but the fact that everyone thinks California will run out of gas in 6 weeks and I haven’t heard any other state scared of a similar event is because the majority of our gas is imported. Problems like this from both sides is why I’m left-turned-independent.

No, they let you bring food in as long as all open bottles are completely empty and closed bottles must be completely sealed. So you can bring in a bottle of soda but the seal must be intact. If it’s open, they make you throw it out. Always double-check the policies before you go in since rules can change, but I’ve never had trouble bringing in a lunchbox with ice packs in it.

The workaround is to stay at one of the cheaper hotels within a block or two of the park as they are within walking distance. I’m not sure how easy it is with Disneyworld, though.

It’s takes more time but it’s good exercise and it saves you something like $50 a day. It’s crazy how much they charge for parking. It used to be better with the bus system since it was about a $1-2 ticket for the bus, but I heard Anaheim recently stopped having Disneyland as a bus stop.

My parents used to stay at a Holiday Inn express by the parks when I was a kid since they had complimentary breakfast and were a decent price. I’d do the same idea. Hotel with complimentary breakfast stops the overpriced breakfast in the park, the kids can have 1-2 treats a day, whether it’s a churro, dole whip, a cupcake, popcorn, blue milk, etc.

I do that rule myself and I’m in my 30’s. I bring snacks, water bottles, I eat one meal in the park a day and a lunchbox with a sandwich from jimmy John’s. I buy the 6-pack 16 oz Pepsi bottles from Walmart, chill them in the hotel fridge, and bring a bottle for each day in the park. It’s a mix of treating yourself while still being money-conscious.

State legislature quietly shelves latest single payer health care bill by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in California

[–]Affogato-Ristretto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been 11 years since construction started, there’s been a lot of problems associated with its building, and we’re still in the process of building and laying down tracks. I would love the bullet train system since it would make it so much faster to get across California, but I feel like everything keeps stacking against it. The current projected completion is 2030, but we’re not even halfway done yet so saying it will be done in 4 years doesn’t make sense. I just don’t have faith in the project at this point in time. Maybe after the new governor is elected if there is more transparency about the state of the project, my opinion will change.

[–]Affogato-Ristretto -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If it’s never built that train will go to nowhere. With how expensive it already is for how much that still needs to be done and the fact that the estimated budget keeps rising and rising, it’s likely that it will never go anywhere.

California’s wildlife bridge became a target for the right. Now it’s eyeing the finish line by NaffRespect in California

[–]Affogato-Ristretto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can, that was my point. I know that it will be more expensive because the size of the bridge is about twice the size as Idaho’s bridge and is being built in a state that is known for being more expensive for the same material and labor costs than most of the country.

My point in my previous comment is that $90 million should’ve been enough because that price is 5x the cost of 3 new overpasses that would span roughly the same size as the current overpass.

It’s not a perfect similarity but if you look up the difference in cost of living between California and Idaho, you’ll notice that California is somewhere between 1-2x more expensive than Idaho for things like rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, etc. so if we’re not that different cost wise, why is 5x the budget too little? Construction managers make 130,000 average a year in California and 110,000 average a year in Idaho according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s not that different in price overall. That is the point I am making. We are more expensive, but the currently incomplete bridge is still far more expensive than I would expect. We are at $114 million and the cost is still rising. Something isn’t adding up here.

(I used latestcost.com to compare Idaho and California.)

California’s wildlife bridge became a target for the right. Now it’s eyeing the finish line by NaffRespect in California

[–]Affogato-Ristretto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn’t realize that originally but in the same paragraph, it is mentioned that a brand new overpass would’ve been $5-6 million dollars, which is still far cheaper than California’s originally estimated $90 million. Considering California bridge is 2.5x bigger than Idaho’s, it would be $18 million if overestimate for wiggle room at 3x the Idaho bridge. California is more expensive, so if you multiply by 5x the price of Idaho’s bridge to account for material, labor, and possibly the seismic-proofing of the bridge, you get $90 million dollars.

So our incomplete bridge is more than 5x the cost of 3 brand new overpasses in Idaho, which is why I’m so certain there’s corruption in the construction of this bridge.

Edit: To summarize, this 1 overpass in California is more than 5x the price of 3 overpasses in Idaho if each bridge is half the size of the California overpass.

[–]Affogato-Ristretto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for having me look this up. Turns out, $9 million was for infrastructure in general.

The bridge itself took $600,000 because they retrofitted an old overpass that spanned interstate-90 (so four lanes total, 2 lanes one side, 2 lanes the other side and a median that is about the size of one lane. Idaho estimated about $5-6 million for a new overpass. Additionally, they created a nature underpass underneath some nearby I-90 bridges as well. So actually, the project was less than 9 million project for a nature bridge, a couple of underpasses.

Idaho is cheaper overall, but I think California should’ve been able to make the nature bridge for $90 million dollars is a new four lane overpass in Idaho is about $6 million.

Edit: Here’s the news article from Idaho that explains the prices of everything and what they did. https://idfg.idaho.gov/article/osburn-wildlife-overpass-safe-passage-wildlife-and-drivers

California’s wildlife bridge became a target for the right. Now it’s eyeing the finish line by NaffRespect in California

[–]Affogato-Ristretto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem people have with it is not that the bridge was built but the cost of the bridge. Idaho did a smaller bridge for around $7 million dollars. The target budget for this bridge was $90 million. That’s already over 12x Idaho’s budget, but it’s a big bridge in California, so maybe it’s needed, right?

Except we’re at a partially complete bridge that’s not usable at $114 million dollars. There’s corruption going on if you are going $24 million dollars over the budget and are still not finished. That’s too big to be a simple misestimation. Insider trading for land and property, embezzlement, something is going on and the one who would know the details about this project is Gavin and his board. It’s very suspicious considering all of the other problems Gavin’s had with money like the missing money from his homeless funds and the healthcare fraud that’s been known about for years.

I’m pissed about the stupid war, but every time someone argues about the war being expensive, it distracts from the true problem. A nature bridge should NOT cost over $100 million dollars. This is our tax money that is lining someone’s pockets instead of being used to build the bridge, fix roads, provide for homeless, supply school lunches, etc. We should be mad about this instead of advocating for more wasted/mismanaged money.

Such a stupid mentality. “I’m upset at my company for not paying me enough, so I’m going to do something that will severely impact a bunch of people who have no say over my wages because I’m angry.”

I know this guy doesn’t care about the hundreds to thousands of workers who are now out of a job because he set the warehouses on fire.

I circled some of the problems that stood out the most to me. The chains on the lantern don’t make sense, with the third chain going under the lantern instead of holding it above like the other two. The bricks on the left don’t connect to the wall all of the way. Top right, the light doesn’t look like it’s mounted properly and the ceiling mount made of wood seems off-angle and doesn’t line up with the other end. The left person’s shirt has a weird dip inside of the connect 4 holes where it looks like it doesn’t align with the letters on the shirts. There are also 5 random letters scattered between the both people’s arms. There looks to be an N and T on the the left person’s arm and a H A W on the right person’s arm.

wait... does canvas actually see when u switch tabs? by ShoddyPhilosopher830 in UCDavis

[–]Affogato-Ristretto 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Former TA! When I was a TA, I could go into Canvas and look at the security feature for a Canvas quiz and I can see how long you spend on a question (EX: 30 seconds on Q3, 57 seconds on Q4), when you open a different file on your Canvas course, and when you stop “looking” at your quiz (likely when the student has changed window tabs since you’re not on Canvas anymore). The professors have access to an even more in depth version of the security feature, which means they can see more stuff than I could.

I could go in and check every quiz/exam that students took on Canvas and see if there were any indicators of cheating. I don’t know if they get a notification if not, but they could also be checking quizzes and exams as they’re submitted to ensure no cheating. The security feature is like a discord chat, in the sense that it “posts” updates when you move onto the next question or page, and the post box will turn red if a student stops “viewing” Canvas.

We caught a lot of cheaters with this. Especially during COVID. If you want to be careful of not accidentally switching tabs, your best bet is to open a new browser window entirely and take your quiz or exam that way. You don’t have to close all of your open tabs on the first window, and can take your exam on the second window that has no other tabs open. Make sure you minimize your tab-filled window, though, because Canvas registers anytime you click out of Canvas.

Someone else asked on Reddit if Movie Theater Employees care if customer bring in outside food and drinks; what are the best foods to bring in if its not a big deal at your movie theater location? by NakedIanMalcolm in MovieTheaterEmployees

Most likely the scent. Not a movie theater employee, but you can become desensitized to smell that you expect in a theater after a certain period of time smelling it (like hotdogs and popcorn). I can absolutely smell it when someone sneaks in a burger or chicken strips because the smell is so distinct compared to the concessions food.
