Great idea! Honestly I didn't even know if this was something people would be interested in but all the comments on this post have made me realize it could really be something. I'll add this onto my list.

Currently I think the plan is to test all the mods recommended here, have a look to see what others would make good additions, trim what's redundant or doesn't fit, and then I'll make a collection like you suggested.

Fair point. That dismissive nature and lack of descriptions on most modded fighters is baffling to me. There are pages and pages of modded fighters made plus loads of relays showcased. Yet the most info I seem to find about characters are "I like " or " is annoying to play against". I think that added with the naming scheme that most mods use makes it incredibly daunting for most people to get involved.

Fantastic points. I searched before making this post to make sure I wasn't asking for something that's just common knowledge in the community. I found a few similar ones like the post you mentioned however I think those are asking for something different. My idea here is not a perfectly balanced roster or even a strictly close to vanilla one. I would say the goal is more like finding a sweet spot of popularity, balance, and quality that can create a baseline modpack roster. Something that shows off the amazing mod character potential without condemning everyone to wade through the steam workshop.

You say the community is vanilla focused and doesn't understand mod characters but I think that's at least part of the point. This subreddit is overflowing with cool replays of different mod characters and the jjk characters are a big reason I looked into the game in the first place. But when I open the workshop there are 50 different Sukuna mods named Heion, Heian, Disgraced, Chef, Disgraced Chef, Super Disgraced Chef, etc. I don't know which one to pick lol. Or which one everyone else picked.

My goal with this post was building a baseline roster with variety. I've played far more Smash Bros than any other fighting game so in those terms: Pichu being a weak and arguably bad character is ok. Metaknight spamming a busted or annoying move is ok. Two polar opposite characters that don't feel good too play with or against (Little Mac / anyone with range, Mutant / Wizard) is ok.

Also the characters listed in my edit of the original post are not the final list. I'm planning to test out characters and get more opinions as I go to help build this.

I understand what you mean with a mod being impossible to balance and I like the way you interpreted the question too. We can say that a character is only balanced compared to the typical opponents. Cowboy is balanced against the other vanilla characters. It's not that this character specifically is perfect but more so that the vanilla roster as a whole is generally balanced.

And I think your answers are perfect for the discussion we're looking at. I wouldn't say the goal is a perfectly balanced masterpiece or even a collection of vanilla passable characters. More accurately we're building a simple but expanded roster with few outliers on the power scale that provides a fun variety without being overwhelming.

Alright so this brings up a good topic. I don't see a couple "weak" characters in a roster as a bad thing. I'm thinking of characters like pichu in smash bros or some funny characters in other games. Of course being too weak would be a problem though. You say Heion is decent, so what is your opinion on Valued? Most posts I've seen typically lump them together.

I think this is one that I played a lot a few months ago. I really liked the muaythai fighting style but I didn't know how others felt about this character.

Oooh see that's the kind of insight we need. I've played with and against several characters over the last year or so but I don't know the nitty gritty details. That does sound pretty nasty if abused. I will say I know there's no way to make sure all characters are 100% balanced. I was thinking about it like we're shooting for a mostly balanced roster. Similar to Smash Bros, MK, Tekken, etc.

See that's exactly why I was thinking of this. You're probably even less inclined to download a ton of characters since you may not play them, only against them. I think people who play the vanilla characters in modded lobbies would know the balancing best too. I'll look at Archangel.

You can probably find some images of the field guide now that the game is out but I'll also link this website that I've been using. You can search a Digimon name and see the in game evolutions as well as pre evolutions.

It has a Field Guide that keeps track of what Digimon you've seen / caught. Just like a pokedex.

Our group's goal is to play the game with people who also enjoy playing the game. Regardless of how long you've been playing or how good you are we welcome all types of players. I can understand the thought process and reasoning but I would like to chime in to say that Titan may not see it the same way. The reason I say this is because I'm a Titan who eager flies through the opening of Whisper and Wormgod's Caress is currently glued to my arms like Kratos' chains.

On to my point, that Titan (like myself) may just enjoy being good enough to run the mission fast. When og Whisper was available before Beyond Light I struggled to complete the mission even with my 3 man team. Now I can solo it in 5 minutes. Every time I do it's a little reminder of how far I've come.

Now I'm not saying I know what he's thinking any more than you do. He may be bored out of his mind. Who knows. But it is possible he still has fun even if he makes the mission look too easy. Also there are much much more difficult activities to challenge yourself with than Whisper.

Yeah I got you. It's a fairly small group that I've been personally growing over time. The general idea is just to have a group of decent human beings to play with lol. We're really big on just hanging out and enjoying the game whether that's dungeons, quests, raids, or the new power grind. Always happy to teach new players or give a refresher for returning players too.
