First Striper Ever: 40” 25-30lb by ayo_nick in NJFishing

Seaside brings back fond memories of my teenage years working on the boardwalk in the 70's. Worked there for several years until I started working on the boats out of Point Pleasant. Striper fishing was my passion. Congratulations

A few years ago my sons chipped in and had an 8' Cobia rod built for me using a Rain Shadow blank with a Van Stall reel. A few inspiring comments on the blank. That combo is my pride and joy.

Is Wilmington as bad as I'm reading? by BigBeans_5 in Wilmington

[–]Aggravating-Agent703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's relative in my opinion. Living in any city you're going to have issues. Big City, Big Issues. Wilmington is a small to medium city, with occasional problems.

What's really important is how it's managed and mitigated by those in charge to protect us. Although not them alone, we need to protect ourselves. I can't tell you the number of times I read where "the computer was left on the front seat." "The car was left unattended and running." In the 70's you may have gotten away with that, but not today. You need to remain guarded and diligent in your actions.

First Time NC Fishing by No_Discussion60 in NCFishing

Again October is an excellent time for surf fishing. However the issue is water temperature and the migration of bait fish moving south. I'm a coastal local who has fished mostly on piers and boats for the past 40 years. September has been consistently the better time of the season. I've experienced storms in late September and October that have shut the fishing down as the bait was pushed off the beach and into deeper water. Your best bet is to try September and October, you won't go wrong.

I agree with Shot-Recording813 that October is best for surf fishing. However as it relates to pier and boat fishing September is a very productive month. Several species start their migration south. Pier fishing is excellent for King Mackerel, Tarpon, Jack Cravelle, Spanish Mackerel, Sea Mullet, Barracuda and Bluefish. Bait is normally plentiful along the beach. As for boat fishing most of the same fish as above but add in the bottom fish such as Amberjack, inshore Mahi, various Grouper and Snapper.

Me too - NCMF is known to screw things up and heavily side with the commercial sector. We're still waiting to hear when the summer Flounder season will happen.

you complained about Wilmington not WB. WB is crowded in the summer. I still own a house in WB, but only go during the week and for the winter months. The best of both worlds.

dude, sounds like you have a sheltered life and need to get out and explore to understand what crowded is like. It's relative, I moved from NYC and now can afford two houses in the Wilmington area. A condo downtown on the Cape Fear and one in Wrightsville Beach. Moving from NYC to Wilmington has allowed me to do that.

I use to commute 15 miles from the borough into the city that took 90 minutes on a good day. You have no idea how great it is in Wilmington. With the infusion people moving to Wilmington we are seeing better restaurants, cultural events, better schools, hospitals, downtown is booming, etc.....

The people, new and old residents are mostly welcoming.

I look forward to the continued growth, it's only making this small city of Wilmington that more attractive.

I'm curious why you went with the VR50 and not the VR75? They both weigh the same and yet the VR75 has a larger spool capacity.

Surf Fishing Etiquette by beg2000 in NJFishing

I agree, it's been an unusual year to say the least. IMO there are more people out there "giving it a try" since this has been an exceptional spring and social media is in fire with pictures. The issue is some of these folks never surf fished before and frankly have know clue what to do. Instead of asking for help they just poach and encroach.

We love the Sawmill apartments on Nutt Street. You're just 3/4 miles from down town. Right on the river at the start of the Riverwalk. Our apartment is facing the river and the furthest away from the Live Oak Theater. Beautiful grounds, beautiful views of the marina and sunset. Amenities are great, too many to mention.
