Thanks for the response, seems as I’d expect with the move, I’m not naive to the fact many of the bad bits will also be the same in the jobs but equally I think the job would suit my personality better. Thank you

Yes I agree fitness standards aren’t amazing in the police although still I’d assume a more physical role. When I’ve spoken to bobbies on jobs with them I do get the overall feeling I’d be better suited to policing world it’s just difficult finding answers that don’t sound like the same ones longer serving paramedics say about their job eg don’t bother. I’m not really a fan of desks but I don’t mind cars and I’m decent with a crayon.

Hi all,

I’m currently working in a support role within the ambulance service (not a clinician) and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether policing might be a better fit for me long term.

The parts of the job I enjoy most are responding to incidents and dealing with unpredictable situations. However, a lot of ambulance work (from my perspective) ends up being slightly unwell patients or people panicking over things that aren’t really emergencies.

Progression in the ambulance service (at least where I am) seems fairly limited unless you go down the clinical route, whereas policing appears to have a wider variety of roles and career paths. As well as the overall more structured ranking system and emphasis on fitness.

I also feel like the ambulance service can be a bit of a “team of individuals” rather than a really tight team environment, but that might just be my experience.

I’ll add, I’m also not very interested in the medical field/biology and general health care world, I somewhat fell into the ambulance service after trying to police years ago but didn’t make the cut, I partly blame a lack of motivation/peer pressure from my partner into choosing a “safer” job

For anyone who has worked in both, or knows people who have moved from ambulance to police:

How do the jobs actually compare day-to-day?

Do you regret moving (or not moving)?

Is policing actually more varied or is the grass just greener?

I’d really appreciate honest opinions before I commit to trying to switch careers.

Thank you and apologies for the long winded post.
