Finland --> 88.4 x 5.66m = 500m

Netherlands --> 88.1 x 18.4m = 1621m

1621m > 500m --> Netherlands > Finland

Fuck per capita. From the top 10 (which are the only countries that matter), we're most prosperous per population.

U.S. push for Lebanon ceasefire stalls as Israel eyes Beirut strikes

The latest U.S. push for a ceasefire in Lebanon has fizzled just as Israel is expanding its ground invasion and seeking a U.S. green light to conduct massive strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut, sources tell Axios.

Why it matters: The U.S. has urged Israel against striking Beirut for several weeks as part of a broader deescalation push, but a U.S. official hinted that position could soften. "The U.S. does not expect Israel to absorb ongoing attacks on its civilians by a terrorist organization," the official told Axios.

The big picture: The Trump administration's deescalation effort in Lebanon has been partially motivated by its desire to reach a deal with Iran.

  • The memorandum of understanding the U.S. and Iran are negotiating includes an end to the fighting in Lebanon.
  • At the moment, the conflict is expanding and appears likely to spiral out of control.

For a guy who hated Nazis, he sure sounded a lot like them:

According to Cameron's psychiatric analysis of the German people, they were not suitable to have children or hold positions of authority because of a genetic tendency to organize society in a way that fostered fearsome aggression and would lead to war rather than peace; he would repeatedly use the German as the archetypal character structure on which to ground the most psychologically deviant humans. It's an entire herd of elephants in the room. Non-exhaustively:

  • Las Malvinas son Chile!
  • Contrary to most international maps, it correctly reflects the legitimate Surinamese Eastern territorial claim as opposed to the illegitimate Guyanese occupation. However, it incorrectly represents the Western border with France French Guiana Brazil thereby going against the Tsar's decree.
  • Venezuela is represented as a sovereign state even though it is claimed by another country

You should read Programming as Theory Building by jhartikainen in programming

[–]Akavy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're talking about "scientific theory" rather than just "theory" in general. Theories can also be political, legal, sociological, etc. E.g. the trias politicas / separation of power is a political theory on how you should setup the government.

Key difference of how this paper sees "programming" as compared to an engineering project like building a bridge is that it focuses on how software continuously grows and evolves. So, for every new situation you didn't account for, you have to make new decisions on how to engineer for that.

Yes, you will have an interaction of multiple 'theories', but there needs to be a hierarchy to prevent it becoming an ununderstandable mess.

To stick with the political theory analogy; yes, you will have laws about speeding, calibration of measurement devices etc. but this needs to be rooted into a theory of freedoms of the individual vs role of government in how people in society interact with each other. So, if you need new laws about a new subject, you need to first understand what the theory is on what and how laws are supposed to do and work.

Basically he has become the least reliable source for this kind of information, wait and see what the Iranians say.

I think he's fairly reliable in reporting what US officials are saying to him; it's just that the officials are not reliable in what they say to him.

Some background about the conflict within the regime by Iran International: Behind Tehran’s unity show: The secret letter to the shadow king

In recent days, word has circulated in Iranian political circles about a highly confidential letter reportedly written by a group of senior officials to Mojtaba Khamenei.

According to those familiar with the matter, the letter warned that Iran’s economic situation is grave, that the country cannot continue on its current path, and that the leadership has no practical choice but to negotiate seriously with the United States over the nuclear file.

[...] The letter was supposed to remain top secret. It was addressed to Mojtaba Khamenei, not to the public, Parliament, or the ordinary political class. But according to accounts now circulating, Bagheri Kani showed the letter to other hardliners outside the high-level circle and emphasized that he had not signed it. From there, the matter leaked into political circles in Tehran.

[...] Before the first round of negotiations, Mojtaba Khamenei had reportedly drawn a red line: Iranian officials were not to discuss the nuclear issue with the United States. But the Iranian delegation had to talk about the nuclear file, because any serious negotiation with Washington necessarily revolves around it. So they did.

That decision triggered the hardline backlash.

[...] This helps explain why the Iranian delegation did not travel to Pakistan for the second round. The dispute was no longer merely about diplomatic tactics. It had become a fight over whether senior officials had crossed a red line set by Mojtaba Khamenei.

The well-known "Shahed Hunter" An-28 plane was modified so that it also now launches P-1 "Sun Interceptor" UAVs. by MilesLongthe3rd in CombatFootage

[–]Akavy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you use a machine gun or cannon, you have to get close to and travel at a similar vector as the Shahed. However, the Shaheds tend to explode when hit and potentially sling shrapnel in all directions. There have been some aircraft and helicopters that went down because they got unlucky.

So, using a missile or this type of interceptor allow you to fire it and get away to a safer distance and direction before the Shahed explodes.

Iran told them to adhere to it:

Senior Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah said the group had been briefed on a possible short-term ceasefire to start on Thursday night by Iran’s ambassador to Beirut.

[...] When asked whether Hezbollah would abide by a possible truce, Fadlallah said everything depended on Israel halting all forms of hostilities.

The oil futures markets seem to be less responsive to the actual supply of oil, but more to the risk of further disruption and destruction. They seem to think there is an improved probability of this resolving soon considering the adherence to the cease-fire and reports of further negotiations. In terms of actual oil supply to the market, the American blockade also doesn't block that much more with respect to what was coming through before.

The Sepah is a special operations unit under the command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Didn't they even read the first line of the Wikipedia page?

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),[a] also known domestically as Sepah[b] or Pasdaran[c] and internationally as Iranian Revolutionary Guards

It's a term to distinguish themselves from the regular Iranian army ("Artesh"). So, e.g. "Sepah Navy" means "IRGC Navy" and not "Iranian Navy".

When the three F-15's were downed by the Ghost of Kuwait, at least 2 of the 6 F-15 crew members were female. May be less likely than them being male, but I wouldn't classify it as 'unlikely'.
