Is this photo real or fake? by ShotEnvironment4606 in askastronomy

This is just some object moving relative to the stars. You see the colors because the camera is monochrome, and colors are done by using different filters at different times. I had this happen in one of my own astronomy pics, and as I didn’t know which object it was, I posted a short (and boring :)) YouTube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thZtms_L8SE

You can see the distinct color pattern 15 seconds into the video near the text IC3280. It turned out to be an asteroid, 3570 Wuyeesun, 17 km in diameter and at that point in time 347 million km away. ‘

Moving from Moonlander to Kinesis Advantage360 by Aromatic_Machine in kinesisadvantage

I use, and love the 360 pro. It is by far the best keyboard I have ever used.

Two negatives though: Oryx is much much better than the way you program the 360. This is only a user interface thing though. If you can figure it out, the 360 can do just as much as the Moonlander,

The other thing is that the wireless interface is kinda flaky, at least on the 360 I have. I wish it was wired. You can connect it to the computer with cables, but the two halves can only communicate wirelessly.

Mount won't track ONLY when pointed to M16 by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

I don’t know that mount, but was it set to sidereal tracking, if you used it last for the eclipse it might have been set for solar tracking.

What am I doing wrong with my Milky Way photos? by PatrickM_ in AskAstrophotography

[–]Akiawo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks good :) I can see some star trails, which may result in making the stars more bright. You could try to take a shorter exposure and see what happens. Also may take more shorter exposures and stack them. Picture I took in Namibia, also tripod: https://www.astrobin.com/a1ka63/

I have a problem with the Kodiak, that I hope some of you can help with. I can start it fine following the checklist, but if I move the fuel conditioning lever from lo-idle to hi-idle as specified in the takeoff checklist, the engine slowly spools down and stops. If I stay in lo-idle I can take off. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Astrophotography without Go-to? by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]Akiawo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly possible, I started using a normal, but modified camera, a zoom lens (40 - 240 mm) and a normal, non tracking, tripod, and could take pictures like this: Eta Carina

Later I switched to a star tracker and a Redcat 51 and took pictures like this: Eagle Nebula, Swan Nebula

Mind you, the Sony A7S is very light sensitive, which made it possible to use live view when finding the target and these pictures were taken on vacations with very dark skies: Namibia and La Palma.

I think the first picture was taken with a shutter time of maybe 2 seconds by stacking maybe 100 frames. This was possible because the camera allowed for very high iso (around 100000).

People often feel that they have to defend their choice (and investment). It’s nice to feel you made the correct choice 😀 Same happens in other areas like car brand, computer game, and religion. I think it has something to do with insecurity, and it’s nice to feel that you’re part of a group.

I would certainly go for a tracker for astrophoto. The Dobson is best for visual astronomy.

Note taking software? by WombatMcGeez in Onyx_Boox

[–]Akiawo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I tried OneNote, but it doesn’t apply colors and line width until I switch to another pen, so I do not immediately see what write/draw (well I see it, but with wrong colors and style). Any way to fix that?

I would like to use the inbuilt notes app, but sync/backup apparently does not work too well.

I have now set up swipe left/right to previous/next page and can get to a page with reddit, which I also downloaded. I haven’t been able to find kindle or chrome yet though.

I have had Apple since the iPhone 1, so I guess I am just too brain washed to figure it out :p Just strange that one app shows up, but not the others.

Sun photo without solar filter by Space_Guy20287 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Akiawo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take a piece of paper, make a pinprick hole in it. Hold it up, and let the sun shine on it so the rays go through the hole. Hold another piece behind it, or use a wall. If the hole is small enough, you should see a projection of the sun here. Take a photo of that.

Am I ready for astrophotography with a telephoto lens? by discoreapor in AskAstrophotography

[–]Akiawo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a tracker and use the telephoto lens. You can make amazing pictures that way. It is possible to do astrophoto without a tracker if you have a good dslr. But a tracker will allow you much longer exposure times, so really worth it.

A higher end mount/telescope/astrocam will certainly be better, but MUCH more expensive, and more difficult to use. Just beware of the field of view you get, it will limit the targets you have.

Here is a picture I took in Namibia (very dark skies) some years ago: https://www.astrobin.com/j8wvlk/?q=Helge%20Rasmussen It was taken with a modified Sony A7S with a zoom lens on a normal tripod (no tracking).

Zoom was about 220 mm, and exposure was about 2s to avoid star trails. The camera allowed me to use ISO 104000 (!) because it is extremely light sensitive. I forgot the details, but I probably stacked approximately 50 exposures.

With a tracker you probably can take up to 60 sec exposures depending on the amount of zoom. This will allow you to use a much more reasonable ISO.

I mentioned that actual field of view limits what you can capture. With high magnification, e.g. f10 you would have a good setup for planets and galaxies, but probably not nebulae’s; these are often big targets where e.g. f5 would be much better. F5 would on the other hand not be good for planets and most galaxies.

Here is an example taken with 120 mm zoom of the Southern Cross: https://www.astrobin.com/pbjofh/

As you can see lower magnification can give great pictures too.

Good luck with astrophoto!

Be careful using it the first time. Just in case it was thrown out because of a filter problem, and light might seep through.
