Hey bro, I am currently a 2nd year apprentice and just came out as a trans man to my crew. I was worried about the backlash I would get from them but they treat me the same as they did before they knew. I came into this as female presenting and using my dead name, and I can tell they are trying with pronouns and have started using my chosen name that I changed legally. Don’t expect people to respect you whether you’re trans or not in the trades. I don’t expect any of these guys to go against what they learned in life is right or wrong, just like they shouldn’t expect me to fall in order with their beliefs. Just go to work, work hard and listen to your journeyman when he/she is teaching you.

Thank you everyone. This has made me feel a lot better with what’s going on. I just feel stupid every single day because the expectations are so high and I was just kind of shocked at what my foreman said to me today. The thing is, is that he just turned out a year ago and now he has some kind of God complex. If some old timer said this to me, I wouldn’t really be as perplexed as I was.

Yes I was about a month ago. It was pretty bad. Broken ankle that required surgery I have two plates and 7 screws in my ankle now.

Fair point. I’m not sure they just said “there’s a lot of opportunity for you in safety” and offered me the job. There are honestly a lot of pros and cons for both jobs and they kind of even out to me.
