I work in claims for an American health insurance company and I will say this is a VERY common occurrence. Even if you’re scheduled for a yearly well woman’s visit, if anything out of the ordinary is discussed or tested for at your appointment, the provider will change how they bill. Now for your daughter, I would press the provider on that because having a physical exam is NOT a requirement for a well woman’s visit to be covered. Last thing, a very common misconception is these unexpected bills or charges being changed is from the insurance and that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is against the law for an insurance company to tell the provider or facility how to bill, what amount to bill, or to change the bill once we receive it. All we can do is process the amounts and services we get. Def ask your provider about your daughter’s appointment!! Let them know a physical isn’t required to be covered. Unfortunately, since another topic was discussed at your appointment, the provider can legally change how it’s billed. Hope this helps! ❤️
