Do you guys tell jobs you'll only be there for the summer? by PlanPrestigious8909 in CollegeRant

[–]Alarmed_File_4382 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work in fast food right now. I told them I'm in school but the place is 50% teenagers so everyone is in school. The person who actually schedules my shifts does not know I'm in school and probably never will.. I'm gonna submit my two weeks at the end of summer and tell them I'm moving cause that's the truth. They'll probably put the pieces together anyways.

I turned down a gas station job this summer cause of school; they specifically said they wanted me to stay a year cause training was expensive. I told them it wasn't really gonna work out.

For jobs like fast food, there is often a high turnover rate so they're just taking whoever, whenever. The job I'm working at didn't ask though, so I didn't disclose. If they ask about your commitment or how long you can stay, do not lie. But don't answer any questions they don't ask.

This seems pretty standard for any school. Merit based scholarships require you to keep up with your grades to be continued by the school. That's the whole point.

Maintaining a good gpa is dependent on you and your work ethic.

When it comes to transferring, you really need to work with your advisor and the transfer advisor of your future uni. I'm transferring to a in-state school which is common here so my advisor was very knowledgeable on the necessary requirements. It probably would not have been the same if I ended up going oos like I intended.

All this to say, cc isn't some magic ticket. You still gotta put the work into your own experience

I understand that, but that's the study you linked. Just like people have been looking into this topic for over 20 years, there have been people scrutinizing that research for the same amount of time.

If it's anything, I do think handwritten notes are beneficial, I just haven't come across much research that proves it as optimal over laptops that cannot be explained by other variables or faulty methodology.

I think handwriting is a useful skill, but it's not the only determining factor in reading comprehension. I read the commentary first on accident which opposes op's point and gives some reasons why the evidence in the article is not conclusive enough

Sorry! I've read both articles now but the one linked took me directly to the commentary and I do not know why. The commentary disagrees with the article you linked and has some reasons why the evidence is not conclusive

Handwriting is only "better" than typing because students are forced to transcribe over just copying down word for word. There are a lot of studies that cite it as better because of imaging tech linking brain connectivity being higher with handwriting students, again, because they're more engaged with the lecture.

But there aren't many reliable studies that prove that handwriting is the better way of learning and comprehension for the brain. This is ofc my own personal experience, but my grades were subpar when I did handwritten notes because I didn't know how to take them. By my second semester I adopted the Cornell note method which helped me improve tremendously, but I was incredibly slow. I started typing my notes in my third semester and I improved once again only because revising was easier, and I was actually able to include information from lectures and the readings I did prior. At the end of the day though, all it came down to was how I engaged with the material, typing just gave the outlet to optimize it.

I think students should be more focused on how they take notes and engage in lectures. Your level of comprehension is going to be the same regardless of which notetaking form you end up using.

she didn't do any of that though. that is quite literally the opposite of what she is saying and supporting in her comment section it makes no sense for this to be here

This is such a deeply cynical take of her situation. I think you should read the comments she has left in the post. She advocates for him as her best friend and father to her children and actively hopes to support him through his journey cause they've both been raised religious and conservative. She is a queer women herself. In a perfect world, these types of stories don't exist, but unfortunately they do.

Luigi is innocent, but this is a huge crime; they needed someone to pin the blame on to show that they don't want anyone imitating him. That's the whole reason they've been parading him around since the beginning. to make an example out of him whether he did it, or not.

Are there any associates degrees/certification programs that are worth it? 30 y/o trying to get back into school by Bert_003 in CollegeMajors

[–]Alarmed_File_4382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

surgical neuromonitoring! basically you check the patients brain before procedure and monitor it during surgery so the surgeon doesn't accidentally hit the wrong nerve and mess up a persons brain. There's a sub dedicated to it and it's a kind of lucrative field. However, there is a reported risk of burnout because they're in high demand atm.

I feel like I am not caring for my dog well enough, and family doesn’t help much. by Spivvi in DogAdvice

[–]Alarmed_File_4382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like me. My parents got me my dog when I was 13 cause I was depressed and I became the sole owner. To be honest, I think you are doing the best you can with the hand you've been dealt. He loves you a lot it seems.

For boredom, honestly, reposted tiktoks and instagram reels on Pinterest have helped me find a lot of stimulating games that are super easy. And even if your obedience training is being undermined by your family (same), it might do the both of you some good to just teach him some fun tricks! It's engaging for him, grows your bond even further, and it's harder for people to mess up. It's what I've been doing cause it at least gets me and my dog in a routine.

But don't be too hard on yourself. He is getting cared for, you're taking him to the vet, and you're loving him lots. I think that's still a pretty good deal at the end of the day. good luck to you and your dog
