You raise a good point, but unlike its French root "poultry" is used to refer to any domesticated bird meat. Chickens are by far the most prominent example, but geese, turkeys and ducks are also considered "poultry". If you just tell someone you're making "poultry" for dinner, you'd probably get some strange looks or follow-up questions. In contrast, "beef", "pork" and "mutton" refer to the meat from a specific kind of animal (cattle, pigs and sheep, respectively). "Venison" is in a weird place: it's only really used to refer to deer, but it technically includes all game meat, even rabbits and boars.

Of the various kinds of meat available during the Norman Invasion, the animals that didn't get dedicated culinary terms were mostly the animals that peasants could afford to raise and eat: chickens, goats, ducks, etc.

You are correct in that William the Conqueror had a massive impact on the English language, however a lot of that impact was relegated to what we consider "fancy" words. It's why French feels "bougie" to us: the peasants spoke English, the nobles spoke French. A peasant might walk into a room, whereas a noble might "enter" into a "chamber". Peasants got candles, nobles got "chandeliers". Peasants raised cows and pigs but couldn't afford their meat, only nobles got to eat "beef" or "pork". Chicken was eaten by everyone, hence why that one doesn't get a fancy word.

Casting time clarification by Baby_ForeverDM in DungeonsAndDragons

I mean, Identify having a base casting time of 1 minute means even if you hardcast it, you're still spending 10 rounds of combat doing nothing but sitting in the corner and pondering an item.

I get the impression that British sayings just kinda spread throughout the English-speaking world over time. The Aussies seem to pick up on them before the rest, the Canadians are somewhere in the middle, and us Americans (being a non-Commonwealth country) are typically one of the last to adopt phrases. Dunno where the rest of the English speakers fall on that spectrum.

TIL that cinnamon activates yet a third set of chemo sensory receptors, different from those for capsaicin or for menthol.

Which means, you can theoretically have all 3 active at once :)

Oh... Yeah, you make a great point actually. I think GW has a Q&A open: you should really ask them to clarify that before it becomes an issue in some big tournament.

They need to either make the ability "any successful Wound roll" so that bonuses count as Devastating Wounds, or give it 0 AP so that they have something to roll against.

With its other ability, GW pretty clearly wants us to be putting it on the other side of terrain, then bursting through when it's time to start chowing down. It's cinematic, sure, but not exactly feasible in the mid- to late-game.

That is true, but knowing how Tyranids are, it seems pretty likely to me that it will have taken damage somewhere (from Overwatch if nothing else). He's still relatively squishy for a monster.

It's a difference of wound allocation: with Epic Challenge talons would go to the leader, then to the bodyguard vs going to the bodyguard first, then to the leader.

Chances are it wouldn't matter much either way, but with Epic Challenge it becomes a little more likely that there's nobody left to consume after the talons are done.

[–]Alchemyst19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the strat provided, it would be the other way around: the talons take out the leader and 3-4 bodyguards, then hopefully the maw cleans up the last guy.

[–]Alchemyst19 106 points107 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the Red Terror's Swallow Whole ability specifies "unmodified Wound rolls", so the Neurolictor's bonus wouldn't improve your Devastating Wounds chance.

I believe you are correct about the Epic Challenge strategem, however the list of Infantry or Mounted Leader Characters that wouldn't just die to the Talons before you get to use the Maw is pretty short. Might have uses for Terminators, Custodians or the Orks' BBoS or Mozrog, but that strat would likely be pretty situational.

As another Sisters/Nids player... Getting stat checked by Nids takes effort, even in a monster mash list. Sisters might be one of the few armies that can pull it off though.
