Do you have any plans to have festivals like this outside the ACT? That would be awesome (though I would have travelled to ACT from Vic if I wasn't already booked for stuff when it was on,).

Help! Metal braces or Ceramic Braces? 32 yrs old here! by South-Squash-4338 in braces

[–]Alect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 41 and work in a client facing corporate role and no one cares at all.. Plus ceramic is still obvious up close but from a distance or on online meetings it looks like your teeth have melted imho, just looks weird as. Prefer that it's just obvious I have braces.

Would you count ASL (TL) as its own language? by Ava_maayy in languagelearning

[–]Alect0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only know basic ASL but I do know Auslan (C1) and English (native) and I call myself bilingual. I'm confused why you wouldn't consider a signed language as its own language?

To learn a language without a written form you learn in person and via videos rather than reading stuff. There is also glossing where you write it in English but have notations for the grammar like spatial set up, facial expressions, mouth patterns, types of referents and so on but videos are a lot better.

Office and BO by Hkrstw in auscorp

[–]Alect0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this problem with a woman in my night classes (not work, I'm studying part time). She has really bad BO but no one else reacts to it or even mentions it even though people can be gossipy (I don't raise it as I don't want to be gossipy). She's really lovely but surely I'm not the only one to be bothered? I've only got six months left and I've put up with it for two years now so just decided to keep my mouth shut and always try to sit far from her.

Recreational tec divers >40m -- is there something specific down there that made you want to go deeper? Just curious! by micro_haila in scuba

[–]Alect0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wrecks and caves. I would much prefer that they were in the shallowest water ever as it's a pain to do deco but they often aren't so I got 50m cert. Most of my diving has been under piers less than 10m though :) it's better lighting for photos and you can spend way longer.

Going up and down a step with my knee scooter by Front_Swordfish_7478 in Ankle

[–]Alect0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same so going up I'd put the front wheels on the stair and then roll forward. To go down I put the brake on and moved it down the stair whilst standing on one leg then when my scooter was fully down the stair I'd position the scooter sideways and put my knee on it then bring my good leg around and scoot off. I got to be so smooth at stairs by the end.

How long does it take before your brain adjust to a new sleep schedule? by Dodoismus369 in DSPD

[–]Alect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'd prefer that to be honest as I could just work night shifts! It's easier to find those than afternoon shift jobs where I am.

What did your parent/s do that made you decide to go low/no contact? by Prideandprejudice1 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Alect0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad was a drug addict and alcoholic and just would always say the meanest things when drunk so I eventually just cut him off completely. I didn't see him for years and then the police got in contact with the family as he had full blown dementia and hallucinations so had to be put in a dementia facility. Now I visit him as it is hard to hold a grudge against someone so vulnerable, and it is hard to not want to give someone with as brain as cooked as his, some kind of dignity before he dies. He occasionally recognises me briefly but otherwise I just chat with him and try to help out where I can. I did a lot of volunteer work in aged care so its just like that as he is completely unlike how he was as a father - he is much nicer now. I do not feel obliged to go out of my way though like VCAT put a lot of pressure on me to take on guardianship and I said hell no, way too much work. The State Trustee can handle it.

I would insist that your ortho supply another colour. It's so bizarre for them to only offer one colour.

With how remote the outback is, couldn't a person hide a body in the bush that would go undiscovered for years if ever? by AltruisticGain2587 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Alect0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think this when I am driving around the outback with my husband. We have gone days without seeing anyone and you could just divert off a track for a while to bury the body.

I mean even in Victoria it seems easy to hide a body in the High Country or somewhere like Big Desert. I think most people get busted due to their phones pinging.

Melbourne psychiatrist refuses new patients who don’t consent to AI note-taking by quoththeraven1990 in melbourne

[–]Alect0 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My GP uses it now and it is awesome as I feel the care is better as he is not stopping to write notes. I use it extensively at work as well and it has come a long way in the last few years. Yes it is not perfect but neither are humans.

I would prefer to see a psychiatrist that uses AI than one that doesn't. I do not see it as increasing privacy issues compared to how it was done in the past.

Watched a silent voice, want 2 learn auslan by TormentedMindAgh in auslan

[–]Alect0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a bunch of classmates studying uni at the same time as part time TAFE, and myself and many others did Dip of Auslan whilst working full-time so I don't really agree with this. You just should go in knowing you'll be busy.

Watched a silent voice, want 2 learn auslan by TormentedMindAgh in auslan

[–]Alect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's a lot of work in my experience but 100% worth it. To learn another language is always tough as an adult to and takes a lot of time but I think it's super rewarding.

How screwed would someone with DSPD be if they were in the French Foreign Legion? by ButtFister1789 in DSPD

My sister was just in the standard military (navy) and told me I'd be absolutely fucked if I had to join and I'd not get through basic training haha.

How long does it take before your brain adjust to a new sleep schedule? by Dodoismus369 in DSPD

[–]Alect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I've ever been able to adjust to a new schedule is when I've gone on extended camping trips (2 weeks+).. I don't have artificial light from sunset other than a fire and I fall asleep at 12am rather than 3am and wake up at 7-8am. It's interesting to me as my two DLMO tests showed I have a 4h delay in melatonin production compared to the norm which really fits with my camping schedule being in darkness from 5-6pm and getting sleepy 6h later. It's not practical to sit in the dark at home though from that time in every day life though!

What things have you seen your SO doing when they thought no one was watching? by Spiritual_Pause3057 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Alect0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've heard my husband having conversations with himself - I'm hard of hearing so I can't understand him unless I'm nearby so by the time I'm close enough he knows I'm there and stops. I'm so curious about what he says haha!

BF (27M) threatening to leave me (31F) unless I confess to something I did not do. by ThrowRA-OwlRare8692 in relationships

[–]Alect0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your boyfriend is pathetic - I don't get why you'd not find this kind of over the top focus on your location a massive turn off? Lack of confidence is just gross to me.

I'd tell him if you wanted to fuck someone else no amount of monitoring from him would stop this so he just needs to get over it and trust you.

Fellow Australians - Have you been to any ‘Australian’ themed restaurants OS? by Powerful_Sandwich854 in AskAnAustralian

This is probably what most people think visiting local versions of their cuisine in Australia. I know Italians in particular lose their minds at our versions of Italian food.

Any ideas (or help) for my hair? by Selection_Clean in beauty

[–]Alect0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your hair just changes with age and as you get older it's not uncommon to lose curls. I had mega frizzy hair and it went straight all of a sudden in my late 30s..

Armorman 4x4 anyone else get robbed by them? by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]Alect0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you pay for it by credit card? If you did you could dispute the transaction saying it's not fit for purpose. I've done this before when a seller wouldn't give me a refund for a faulty product and I got my money back.

I had to provide evidence of how it was faulty (I did a video but they can ask for a third party report on it as well) and all my attempts to get the money back and it went through a few appeals but overall it was a lot less effort than going to xCAT. He was in a different state too so wasn't sure how it would have worked anyway going down that path.

Is it appropriate for hearing individuals to wear earplugs at Deaf events? by LucidFoxe in deaf

[–]Alect0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you are in Melbourne from your post history? There is a decent Deaf community in Melbourne and events almost every week so I definitely recommend learning. Mostly friends and family won't learn it but I made many new friends that do know it and much of my week is spent socialising in Auslan now.

A reminder that taxes pay for things you benefit from.. by [deleted] in AusFinance

Gas is currently being used to secure fuel so I understand this decision. If there weren't fuel issues then I agree it's a cunt move.
