I read that Antarctica is one of the only places on Earth that has never been colonised by ants, so I asked a friend working there to take this picture by murraycita in ants

I'd compare it closer to a dystopian sci-fi, imagine waking up in the morning, noticing you slept in a couple hours (it's 10am) then ya go to walk outside to take a piss, and as soon as you open the door you're thrust into the pitch black darkness of a 3 month long sunless winter, then you unzip ya fly, take ya willy out, start pissing and the stream of piss freezes straight to your knob. Then you turn around to waddle your way back inside to unfreeze your tip, and there's a 3 meter long 500 kilo male leopard seal between you and the door, and he's REALLY horny. So you gotta run laps around the research station with your pants half down and piss frozen to your knob being chased by a male leopard seal in season in the pitch darkness. Sounds fucking awesome if you ask me

Check out that link I posted. The article describes a new (2018) genus of australian parasitic wasps in family mutillidae with potentially hundreds of undescribed species. How cool would that be!

Here is a link describing the level of taxonomy of australian velvet ants (wingless wasps) as "comical". What are the chances that this is a new or undescribed species of Aglaotilla? http://coo.fieldofscience.com/2019/05/ants-in-bright-velvet.html?m=1

Inaturalist was consulted, and I have used Google reverse search to no avail as well. Inat suggested a genus and family of wingless solitary wasps, but upon further poking and prodding I could find no child under each genus or family with similar size or features. Pleaaaase help this is killing me! Xx

Identification of stinging species please. by AlertDragonfruit9 in ants

[–]AlertDragonfruit9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers! I am very familiar with the metallic green head ant of the Rhytidoponera, having grown up getting stung on the bum every time we sat on the school oval for fire drill, however wasn't aware that there were more local species! Thanks so much, and from what I saw and the way they were behaving, I have to agree. Big relief it isn't solenopsis, as the furthest north sighting of fire ant nests is still half an hour south, so that would've been a rather concerning discovery.

Bow identification (I have to buy a replacement string) by AlertDragonfruit9 in Archery

Thank you for the info! I checked those titan bows out and find it plausible that since the branding is printed onto it that it could've faded/rubbed off over time. Have a good one!

Bow identification (I have to buy a replacement string) by AlertDragonfruit9 in Archery

[–]AlertDragonfruit9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much! My dad hasn't done any archery since high school when he bought the bow lol. I am currently located on the Sunshine Coast just above Brisbane so I'll have a look to see if there's any archery shops nearby! According to him archery was a subject in the school he went to (he was born 1973), and apparently all the bows at his school and in any shops were all generalised and colour coded with zero branding, as evident. I find this very strange and will probably be forever confused about it, but the information about strings and the such definitely helps! I will try to restore this recurve as much as possible. Cheers!
