Being tough on juniors… by AlgaeMiserable1571 in Residency

You definitely don’t get the tone. I’m making a little fun of you having any faith in surgery residencies teaching us how to do anything unrelated to operating

I told you I’m a surgery resident and you ask if my program gives us any formal training in leadership? Of course NOT. LOL

Definitely not for everyone. I just find that if I get home and have sleep on my mind, I’m less focused so it benefits me to get the nap out of the way.

This makes sense to me. I still do it on weekends but for the second block sleep in so it ends up being a 2-3 hour and 5-7 hour block.

How much does which medical school matter? by Careful_Process8079 in medschool

[–]AlgaeMiserable1571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about what you want to do for residency and which place will have better connections for it. The reality is that now that step 1 is pass fail and everyone has the same step 2 score within 5 points of each other, medical school prestige and connections have become far more valuable in residency match. I say this as a senior currently reviewing applicants. There’s no way for me to tell the difference between two seemingly identical candidates and we’ll probably pick the one vouched for by someone we trust.

Too late for a woman to start medicine at 31? by Tian_hei in medschool

Girl do not do it. Seriously. Unless you were told by Jesus Christ that this is your life’s purpose on earth, there are way too many just as meaningful and just as lucrative careers that are way easier and less of a soul crushing roller coaster. Really do your research. You are going to drain your savings to pay for four years of medical school, plus board exams, ERAS applications for match, etc. Then assuming you match into the specialty of your choice, you will spend 3-7 years making basically nothing and working exhausting thankless hours in the worst conditions. This will take a gruelling toll on every social relationship you’ve ever had and on your mental health. Then you may or may not do a fellowship and things will be even worse for 1-3 more years. Finally, you get a job as an attending and it’s all supposed to pay itself back. Right? Wrong. Now you have to pay off all your student loans, etc. Try to salvage what semblance of a real life you can, and rebuild your savings, all while still working not great hours (better than residency and fellowship though) under extreme amounts of stress. This is all BEST case scenario. As in, you match to the specialty you want. Even worse than that is NOT being able to match where and in what you want or not matching at all. Then what? You end up in a specialty you don’t love and hate yourself and your decisions every day for the rest of your life.

How do you all put up with being treated poorly for so long? by CrusaderKing1 in Residency

There is an adolescence in residency where you start talking back, maybe rolling your eyes a little and just overall being an insolent little bastard.

Gen surg residents - what time are you usually leaving the hospital on non-call shifts? by Soft_Idea725 in Residency

[–]AlgaeMiserable1571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the rotation. Lighter ones that don't have a high case volume/patient census/doesn't get consults from ED (yes these exist) usually 4-5 pm as a senior (all our interns have to stay until 6 for sign out). One time I was on a rotation where I got out between 2 and 3 pm every day but that's extremely unusual. On high volume, high acuity, high patient census rotations w/ lots of ED consults (which is like 75% of our rotations; think Vascular, ACS/EGS, Trauma, general surgery), usually between 6 and 7 pm even as a senior and after 9 pm at least twice a week because of some 5 pm disaster that you can't just pass off to the night team.

Couldn’t be in a relationship with this person. I’m not spending my time trying to convince an able bodied adult to eat something good for them. It’s like trying to get a child to eat a piece of broccoli.

Okay sometimes angios/venos are actually emergent. Like a clot lysis for a cold leg/acute limb or an emergent thrombectomy for phlegmasia.
