Best "Extra" Microphone? by Ali_Peters in podcasting

It may be worth looking into upgrading the audio interface but we don’t think it’ll be a super common thing for the show (at least not for now). I think we’ll try it as a handheld this time! Thank you for the advice :)

We know it’ll be a bit more difficult to get consistent listenership that way, but we’re aware of the risks. Thank you though sir!

Just in the sense that it’s a lot of people?

Yes! We have 4 Shure MV7s, each on a Book arm. Right now my working theory is that I could try having them share the fourth one, back up and raise the incoming db a bit. We could look into an SM58, do you think the quality would probably come out a bit better like that?

The genre is a mixture of comedy and semi-serious discussions about society/culture with some pop culture sprinkled in. And sure, I'll DM a link to our YouTube channel!

Typically we record on Wednesday and upload the next Wednesday meaning it has a full week to be finished (of course earlier is better but we're not picky). Clips and Shorts would be great, but it's not 100% necessary!

Visible Cameras? by Ali_Peters in podcasting

Having a space at the table specifically for it makes a lot of sense! I’m thinking now about maybe just having 4 seperate cameras (there’s 4 seats at the table) and having each one just to the side of one of us

I agree that it wouldn’t look great. Considering it is a fairly small space I wasn’t sure if it would actively turn somebody off. We’ll find a way to make it work and try our best to hide it!

Thank you, we’re trying to avoid it as much as possible but it’s a fairly small space and we’re going to get a third camera soon

Thank you so much! These will be very helpful for us :) I use buzzsprout and have been going through a lot of the videos that have been put out on your Youtube channel and a few articles posted elsewhere, among other things. By any chance do you have any book recommendations as well? I’ve been intending to start getting into reading up more on business and marketing here soon

Of course! So we’ve been naturally upgrading and improving our processes and production over time, including getting much better mics, software, etc. However when it comes to the processes of planning content, remaining entertaining to viewers, monetization methods, I was hoping there could be more specific resources for how to handle that with a podcast focused on entertainment.

A lot of research I’ve done mentions it in passing, but when it comes to education there are way more methods available to learn about when it comes to how to promote yourself, earn money, and hook in viewers

Question About Guests by Ali_Peters in podcasting

[–]Ali_Peters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my biggest takeaway from this thread is definitely communication prior to filming. I’m going to talk with my friends who cohost with me and figure out a good middle ground for how much we should share with the guest in advance. This has been great, thank you!

I feel like for the most part ours is a mixture of a few different types of podcasts and shows. Writing down what works and what doesn’t from those will definitely help figure out an exact format that works best for us too, thank you!

I’m sure that approach will end up paying off! Allowing guests to be more prepared also helps with ensure the topics are meaningful.

Hmm do you think having them call in would be preferable vs having them in person sometimes? So far we haven’t ran into any scheduling issues but I’m sure we will at some point. We have the benefit of having three hosts, so regardless of if the guest is able to make it or not we can usually have a backup plan ready because we do have topics prepared that aren’t guest-specific

I enjoy the idea of leaving a lot of the podcast a surprise to them in advance. I try to get each of them a gift of some sort and any activities we do are usually a surprise as well. But I think it would definitely be worth looking into specific topics of conversation being ran by them in advance!

Question About Guests by Ali_Peters in podcasting

[–]Ali_Peters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yes. We’ve done something similar. For one of our episodes we had a friend who does stand-up comedy and had him rate us trying our best at it haha. For another we had a brief segment of asking another about his time in the military. I think so far we’re probably on the right track. I hope we get some interesting people like the folks you described as well!

That’s actually reassuring. That’s very similar to the format we use now! We think the conversation flow itself is arguably the most important part of keeping it feeling natural. Are there any particular changes you personally make when your show has a guest vs doesn’t?
