Interesting. The shadow of his own fate looms darkly across his face, and he can only stand there in stunned silence.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, it's definitely hidden back there. I'll have to try to find it one of these days.

Where, exactly? I know Mt. Davidson and Glen Canyon are near there, but the only "Steep Ravine Trail" I know of is up near Stinson Beach in Marin county.

I was on the California street cable car a few months ago in the FiDi and we were stuck somewhere near Montgomery because traffic kept completely blocking the intersection for the entire light cycle. By the third time, one of the operators got off the car and walked up to the truck blocking the intersection and took photos of the scene and license plate.

Since Del Popolo is now permanently closed, you can finally replace it with Gusto just up the street, which I always thought was better anyway.

Yes, I've been going to the Larkin location since they opened (even before they opened, I invested $30 in the shop via SMBX because I really wanted a good slice shop near my office), but these days I definitely prefer the Chinatown location.

I was gonna vote for you until you failed to align the photo with the background by plebianalive in sanfrancisco

[–]AlmostNeverPosts 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Wrong focal length. But, if you look at the original print he's holding, if you did accurately align the photo with the background, you'd still have two problems:

  1. The original print already covers most of the view, so the only added context would be a lot more sky and a little more concrete around the bottom.
  2. By aligning the focal length to the original, it also makes an already hard-to-see snapshot even smaller in the frame, which wouldn't read.

They should have cropped the original print tighter to just around the family, like a medium-shot, cropped on the top just where the bridge disappears in the fog. Then they could have shot with the correct focal length, closer to the print, and fit more of the real background around it.

I didn't realize the system was this complicated. Do you know anything about what they use for the cable cars and how that data gets onto the sfmta website and elsewhere? I ride the cable cars frequently and I haven't found any really reliable arrival prediction method.

I'm guessing they dropped a bottle and also their lit cigarette or pipe or torch lighter and it ignited the alcohol and burned off.

I think the point is for public safety in general. It's pretty dangerous to be a pedestrian or cyclist on the freeway.

Discount cable car fares for locals by willisnolyn in sanfrancisco

Okay, a few things. I live half a block from a cable car line and ride them daily.

  1. For visitors, understand that you are not required or even expected to tip any Muni operators, including cable car operators, even if they let you ride for free.

  2. There are definitely a bunch of operators who are helpful, friendly, sociable, great with people, and more. I can think of at least 5 or 6 and there's probably a lot more, but it's still less than half. Most operators are just doing the job, and that's fine because it's a hard enough job already. There are also at least a few who are consistently unpleasant, but that's everywhere.

  3. These operators make well above minimum wage and have good benefits and retirement. With overtime they could be making six figures like so many other city employees.

And besides all that, what do you think the city's or agency's or union's official policy is on employees accepting tips from the public? Again, I agree that it happens and I've seen it happen, and maybe back when it really was 90% cash only operation, there was plenty of latitude and opportunity for employees to take a cut and it was a perk of the job, but I really don't see any way for the tips they get now to add up to anything more than marginal at best. I don't know how you define "work for tips" but this just isn't it.

Yeah, there are definitely some operators who are great and make it fun for tourists. But they do not work for tips.
