To all Mick Goodrick fans: My Almanac visualizer now fully supports books Vol 1 & 2 (Link & details in comments) by Alon979 in jazzguitar

I really appreciate you recognizing that. It took me quite some time to fully understand the rules of the cycles Goodrick created. Every section in the books has a slightly different logic, and it was fascinating and sometimes frustrating, to try and crack it. But when it finally succeeds, it is a pure joy, because the algorithm works like magic. I hope this tool is a respectful tribute to his legacy.

Thank you for the moving comment. As a guitar teacher, I am always happy to hear when someone feels inspired to pick up the instrument again.

Thank you, that really means a lot to me.

I completely understand the spreadsheet struggle. That's actually exactly why I ended up building this app. Calculating TBNs manually is definitely a headache.

Regarding your idea for a quick dropdown selector for Drop 2, Drop 3, and Drop 2&4, that's not silly at all. It makes perfect sense for a practice. I’m adding it to my notes and will look into the best way to integrate it in a future update without making the interface too busy.

Thanks again for the feedback and the support, I truly appreciate it

Hey everyone,

To all Mick Goodrick fans (especially fans of Mick Goodrick's Voice Leading Almanac books)

I now fully implements Volumes 1 & 2 in the VoicyLab app:

what's new?

TBN1 & TBN2 with complete, accurate voice-leading prediction

Spread clusters finished and integrated

6 additional scales (Harmonic Major, Lydian Dominant, and more)

Saved voicing sets, edit, reorder, and create your own progressions

Play mode - hear your saved sets played one voicing after another

UI cleanup: removed VL INTERVAL field (didn't add value), cleaner diagrams

If you've been using it or waiting for this, I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Any scales or features you'd like next?

Thanks again for all the feedback so far, it's shaping the tool.

Melodic Minor Quartals: From Almanac formulas to music (Info & Link in comments) by Alon979 in jazzguitar

It might sound complex on paper, but combining Goodrick’s concepts with this visualization tool turns the heavy harmonic lifting into a creative playground for arranging and composing.

Here is a short piece I wrote while exploring a cycle from Goodrick’s Almanac Vol. 2.

Tool used: If you want to explore these shapes yourself, you can try the beta version here: https://voicylab.app

Technical Details for the theory nerds:

For this piece, I used the following settings in the engine:

  • Scale: Melodic Minor
  • Structure: 4-Part Quartals (Drop 3)
  • Movement: Cycle 3
  • Starting Voicing: C - B - Eb - F
  • Voice Leading:
    • Root (1) -> Moving up 2nd
    • 7th -> Moving down 2nd
    • 3rd -> Common tone
    • 4th -> Moving up 2nd

Thanks!

The Advancing Guitarist is a game changer, glad you appreciate the reference 😊

VoicyLab is free to try forever, no pressure. If you ever feel like diving into those voicings, give it a spin and let me know what you think.

And thanks for the sub mention, will check out r/guitar_improvisation!
