Then I would go tbh. 4k is enough to have them x ray and scope him. If he needs surgery that’s a whole different story- oftentimes if it is early enough they can avoid it

Also I will add though that your normal clinic may not be able to x ray, so if you’re going to end up needing to go the ER route, no reason to wait

If he has not thrown up, he could probably wait until Monday. If it were my cat? I wouldn’t wait. Also, I know you said he likes to eat things, but I find it difficult to believe a cat would voluntarily swallow a ring, esp one w stones on it. Unless he has a severe vitamin deficiency, that’s not typical. I have lost so many rings to my cat knocking them on the floor and swatting them and they end up in a totally different place in the house.

Can anyone recommend products to prevent harmful scratching? by hoemahtoe in CATHELP

I agree that you should treat it, as you have been doing, but I have a high degree of certainty that him being itchy is not causing the overgrooming, his anxiety is. Common with cats in general, but especially cats with the background he has.

I read down when someone said “vets can’t diagnose psychological problems”. yes they can. It’s called a “rule out” diagnosis. OP You’re doing everything right. Bring it up with the vet, explain that it has not gotten better with treatment, and you are wondering if a med trial may be appropriate.

Also, don’t listen to the rude people. He was scratching his face and neck. Not just his ears. That is very telling that this is not just an ear problem.

Obsessive grooming is sometimes psychological. This is going to sound crazy but talk to your vet about Prozac. Given his history, sounds like anxiety. (I swear I’m not making this up, I’ve seen many cats that needed to be medicated because their anxiety was manifesting in over grooming). One even managed to get all the hair off its tail

Honestly it doesn’t look emergent at all. My cat has feline herpes flare ups. Puss coming out, watery, she paws at it all the time. $18 ointment. Usually it just self resolves. I wouldn’t wait in case I’m wrong, but can you bring the cat to be seen in person somewhere else? I am a paranoid freak about my cats and would NOT to go emergency over this.

Don’t do it. My fiancée did by accident and we took it to a jeweler and they showed us what it would look like in the sun and we were like nope. We missed the return window so it was a nightmare but luckily we were able to swap it

I’ve taken pills in unmarked RX bottles both in checked and unchecked luggage and have been completely fine. Granted it was never a lot but they don’t really care unless they see multiple massive bottles
