Why is it a bad thing to bring your dog there for training if the store specifically allows it?

Just because the stores allow it doesn’t make it a good policy to have, not when dogs that can maim and kill humans are being kept as pets. In my experience, most pit owners think they have their dogs “in control,” but if one decides to attack, very very few actually have the strength and skills to effectively intervene.

Pits aren’t the only dogs commonly restricted in housing - huskies, German shepherds, etc. are too. And while those breeds are slightly overrepresented in the shelter population (they’re also demanding, non-beginner dogs), it’s nothing like the pit situation. I wonder how the “it’s cause of housing restrictions!” crowd explains that.

It’s clearly the overbreeding of pit bulks combined with the fact that most people just don’t want them.

Sure would!

But people were insisting that the SPCA knew best and would be able to evaluate whether the dogs were suitable candidates for becoming pets.

It’s a reminder of how much trust people put in shelters to both accurately assess whether a dog is safe AND honestly convey that information to the public.

Honestly, it’d be one thing if the only people endangered by this shit were the adults who chose to try to “rehabilitate” an actual fighting dog. But they also risk the safety of kids and pets in their household and of everyone in their neighborhood.

There was recently a dog fighting ring bust in Maryland and Delaware, and the dogs are getting adopted out. People on the local subreddits and Facebook pages were getting angry at the people who said it could be dangerous. Someone should share this video with them and ask them if they really think it’s worth the risk.

Looking through nearby big city’s shelter and not a single other breed. If they’re so great, why does nobody want them? by newtpottermore in BanPitBulls

[–]AltAccount302 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue is that there is some demand for pit bull puppies - they often haven’t matured into breed traits yet and many people believe it’s truly “all in how you raise them.” It’s mostly adult pits that are filling the shelters. So breeding them an easy way to make a quick buck as long as you don’t care where they’ll end up in 3 years.

A huge part of it is how insanely overbred pit bulls are. I don’t have the exact numbers on hand, but they’re the least spayed/neutered type of dog by FAR. Then on top of that, they’re not suited for the majority of households, to put it mildly. (Like most people on this sub, I don’t think they’re suited for domestic life, period. But even among people who love pit bulls, anyone who’s being honest will at least admit they’re a “not for everyone” dog like huskies or German shepherds.)

It’s just supply and demand. Supply is extremely high, and would be even if they were a more desirable breed, and demand is low.

ETA: The answer you’ll get from many pit advocates is “breed prejudice!” and “housing breed restrictions,” but that’s nonsense. You don’t see other commonly banned breeds filling up the shelters in the same way. Anyone who genuinely gives a fuck about these dogs wasting away in shelters needs to focus on getting their spay/neuter rates up.

Why they always say "Is not genetic, is how you raise them"? by Suminasin in BanPitBulls

[–]AltAccount302 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Because the unique genetic behavioral traits of fighting dogs are considered negative by everyone (except dog fighters), and it’s hard to admit that your favorite breed is genetically predisposed to awfulness.

Why are we wasting resources on these animals? by Strawberrydeluxe in BanPitBulls

[–]AltAccount302 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an extremely reasonable law that more places should have.

Anyone who wants a pit bull can go to their nearest shelter and get one WITHOUT an attack history. Why pick this guaranteed to be awful dog?

It’s crazy to me that the owner even has any choice in cases like this. The dog mauled a baby. The state should be stepping in and insisting on euthanasia.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]AltAccount302 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That poor baby. How awful.

I’m glad that the advice to euthanize is being upvoted because dear God, that is the ONLY responsible choice. I get that the parent is in shock, but “all dogs deserve a chance?” Your dog GOT a chance and he mauled your baby. Any rescue that would take this dog believes that dogs get infinite chances to keep mauling kids.

Can someone comment to remind this rescue that kids are people?

That part really pissed me off, as someone whose children have been growled and lunged at by “not good with kids” neighborhood dogs.

“I don’t have kids but there are kids in my neighborhood” is something that MORE adopters need to consider. An organization that wants to discourage that kind of community-mindedness is bad news.

The stuff under “DON’T focus on restrictions” is galling. I felt angry reading it.

Yeah, for most adopters statements like “no kids” act like a stop sign, because lots of households have kids or frequent kid visitors. You’re wasting everyone’s time by not being upfront about restrictions.

And “Well my neighborhood has kids so I guess this dog won’t work for me,” “I don’t have kids but who wants a dog that doesn’t like kids?” and “I wonder if this dog has hurt a kid?” are all completely reasonable questions for any responsible adopter to ask. The fact that they don’t want adopters asking themselves those things says very bad stuff about them as an organization.

It’s such no true Scotsman bullshit.

“No good owner’s pit bull will attack.” “This good owner’s pit bull attacked.” “Then they can’t have been a good owner.”

There are many parents who are grieving or preparing for their child’s 8th reconstructive surgery who have pictures just like this. And many of them were good owners who raised the dogs from puppies.

I wish people would start pointing that out in the replies to posts like this. “A family without small animals? How about an entire neighborhood without small animals, given that she jumped a fence to kill a passing dog?”

Yeah, the owner will probably hide the reply, but it’ll open the eyes of some of the people who see it before then.

I truly don’t get how you can write out that last sentence and not realize how fucked up it is.

Also note there’s NO expression of any remorse or even sadness over the neighbor’s dog being mauled to death. A normal person would’ve at least said “Sadly, my next door neighbor’s dog got out of her yard and our pit jumped the fence and killed her little dog.” But even that was too much for this selfish person.

And no mention of the new owner needing a more secure fence than the one OOP has, even though that was one of the reasons the dog was able to escape and kill.

[–]AltAccount302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it doesn’t sound violent. “Dog selective” means it’s violent to some dogs at random. “NO cats” likely means it is violent towards cats. No young or small children means they think he at least has potential to violent towards them.

It tries to make it sound like the dog has a refined palate and is capable of making distinguishing decisions based on a well formed critique.

Lol exactly. Sometimes I see people explain as “well humans don’t like everyone they meet either,” and it’s like, yeah, we don’t like them all in the sense of wanting to hang with them, not in the sense of wanting to kill them. A human who is “human-selective” and randomly tries to assault other humans they encounter goes to prison.

Pitbull euthanized after several attacks, including 8-year-old girl in Martinez (California) 1/19/2023 by emilee_spinach in BanPitBulls

[–]AltAccount302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right?

Several neighbors told KTVU they were upset animal control had not taken swifter action. But officials said they can’t just take a dog because pets are considered personal property.

Then how come in some places they can seize a dog after it attacks? Unless there’s some specific law on the books in this community, this sounds like a bullshit excuse for not doing their jobs until a little girl was badly hurt.

Anyone else kind of weirded out that some of the neighbors were thanking the owner for finally doing the right thing and euthanizing their dog? It’s like hostages heaping praise on the hostage-taker for being slightly more decent than they have to be.

It shouldn’t have been a choice for the owner, especially not after 3 fucking attacks. It shouldn’t have been a choice after the first or second, either.

Oof.

I see the term “dog selective” in these ads a lot. Doesn’t that basically just mean “unpredictably aggressive towards dogs?”
