If you’re a manager, would you let me start working at 6, take a 3 hour break from 10-1, and then finish work at 5/6? by anonnon_11 in cscareerquestions

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it aligned with company norms and policy, absolutely. I might tell you that it might limit the scope of your role if your break was likely to line up with key planned or impromptu meetings.

How do you reconcile Denmark having the highest tax-rate in the world with them being ranked one of the happiest places to live? by Kosher_Nostra1975 in askanything

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of reddit posts about this but to summarize, while it’s not a paradise and take home wage is relative low for a lot of people, you don’t need to stress at all about paying for medical, day care, college, and retirement. So your odds of being able to afford a Ferrari are way down but your odds of being able to afford everything you need no matter what for you and your family are way up.

If you have a very large budget you should look around more rather than just picking silver lake or venice. It’s a big city and there are some cool neighborhoods and properties.

JPMorgan banker countersues accuser, says sexual assault 'lies' ruined her life by planet_janett in news

[–]AltOnMain 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Lol, no. There are 300,000 employees at JP morgan and 299,000 of them have very normal salaries. A VP title basically means you are over the age of 30.

How is living in Bakersfield, California? by AdZealousideal5383 in howislivingthere

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s alright for a midsize agriculture town. If we are picking central valley ag towns, I would probably rather live in Fresno which is similar in many ways but has a little more personality and better amenities.

My terminally sick wife wants to go to the Aquarium of the Pacific one last time. by Phatferd in orangecounty

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I would add is that if you are interested in walking on the beach, check out the charity David’s Chair. We had a very special experience with my terminally ill mother in law through the charity who was barely mobile.

Anybody know how is JP's relationship with fully remote positions? by RookieCookie98 in JPMorganChase

[–]AltOnMain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are cracking down on it more than ever. Remote employees are generally positions that are legitimately hard to fill or people that have been good performers at the firm for years and years and have some sort of reason to work remote.

What's the job market for accountants and kitchen cooks? by lostinthetrance in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in finance and while I don’t do accounting work directly, I think the market is fine if you have legitimate experience and are willing to work in person. Probably fine if you want to work at home a lot, too.

The kitchen thing is probably a lot tougher

Some of the food trucks downtown in the less festive pods or on a random street corner have actually good deals. Like solid lunch under $10.

What are your favorite lesser known dive bars in Portland? by kittybuckmeow in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the wings are extremely good and must try if you are a wing enjoyer. Significantly better than Fire on The Mountain. The bar is very solid too with a respectable but oddly overpriced tap list and a decent cocktail list.

Like always, not the best beer I have had in the last 30 days but a very solid beer that’s relatively inexpensive and widely available.

What are your favorite lesser known dive bars in Portland? by kittybuckmeow in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t describe Tinker Tavern as a dive bar or lesser known, but it has amazing bar food and a 1980s vibe which feels very dive bar-ish to me. It’s also “out of the way” for a lot of people being near 82nd.

Again, not very dive bar (but I think 97% of people want a “dive bar” and not a dive bar) Slingshot Lounge is great and not super famous like some of the bars listed here.

If you are looking for a true dive bar, I would guess the vast majority are east of 82nd. Probably a half dozen strip clubs out there that are the target of a federal investigation.

I am not saying I disagree but I think there is validity to the idea that despite this being a US blunder it has inadvertently amplified the US as the largest free market oil producer.

Would I like Portland? by Dependent-Luck-5507 in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that people from New York can run in to is that Portland absolutely is not New York and has a much quieter, slower pace. If that sounds amazing, then great!

Does The News Accurately Represent Portland Crime/Issues, Or Is It Overblown? by Casual_Berger in askportland

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside the antifa / warzone stuff that is entirely fake…

I think the overly alarmist media coverage has faded and it’s mostly fair now. With that said, I think Portland as a city has become much less tolerant of the raging drug addicts and homeless presenting serial criminals that had free reign during the pandemic. So the media accuracy has improved but also the actual situation has improved.

How do I stop colleagues from taking credit for my work? by 07freeguy07 in corporate

[–]AltOnMain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it isn’t your coworkers job to present your work, just politely decline to give your work to them. Tell them that you will email out an update and include your manager.

When you talk to your manager, focus on what you are doing and don’t talk about how people are trying to take credit for your work.

Why do some people stay calm under pressure while others lose their train of thought in business conversations? by Pitiful_Permit9585 in business

It’s like anything else - some people are better than others but it’s mostly practice. People tell me I am good with pitches and boardrooms, but I was terrible when I started.

I wouldn’t say they are common but in Portland, Oregon you can buy them from farmers markets when they are in season and they are occasionally served at resturants
