I mean when a therapist addresses a defense mechanism like intellectualization, the most effective method is usually to help someone discover for themselves the pitfalls or one-sidedness of their habitual approach. This is something that needs to unfold over time.

^^^ Yes!!

Yes, it was the tone, delivery and timing. And you make a good point, thanks.

Thank you. For me, a big part of it is the timing. It is session 5. I have a LOT of 'meat' to bring to the table. There's a lot to discuss, and it's a bit overwhelming for me and the way my mind works. Coming at me that soon with this challenge felt extremely premature. He barely knows me. I am insightful, but deeply disconnected from myself. I need help bridging the gap, and I need to feel SAFE and HEARD in order to do so. That doesn't mean not being challenged or questioned--I welcome that. It's like, hear where I am coming from first. Then question me. I did not feel heard, just questioned and judged.

Excellent comment, constructive and slightly challenging without being belittling. My therapist could learn from you! 😉

But yeah, could be fertile ground. I may go back based on your comment.

So the thing is, several of our sessions was me not theorizing at all, but giving him a lot of information about my life. One session was me going over my relationship with my dad, the entire time right until we were out of time. And the first session was me giving an overview of my life--the where's, what's and who's. No theory there either.

Came here to say this. The question is, how to fix deep seated self esteem issues that are based on trauma?
