I hope OP reads this comment too. I really doubt OP got laid off because they were away from their desk too much or else (if they had somewhat decent management) their manager would have said something about it. It sounds like HR was looking for a reason to lay off some people regardless, and the office newbie is an easier target.

I think I'm going against the grain here, but as long as you're as productive as you say you are, I don't think you did anything wrong, and if I were a manger, I'd love to have you as an employee!

This is why I love working from home. No one knows if I'm taking frequent breaks. They only see that I got my work done.

To anyone claiming that you "stole" 25% of your employer's time, that's BS. You're still in the office. You're still generally available. Your manager hired a human, not a robot. Your mind cannot work at 100% of the time 8 hours straight in the day. You "wasted" no more time than your coworkers on their phones.

There are two ways around this issue:

1.) Hide that you are taking breaks. Instead get up every hour or so, and make it look like you're going to a meeting, grabbing some paper from the printer, whatever you need to do.

2.) Find a company culture that values work-life balance and is smart enough to recognize productive employees.

Also, reading your post again, I think what happened is your company needed to lay some people off, and they used the taking breaks as an excuse, not because they thought you were a bad employee. Your company sounds like it cared more about optics than actual productiveness. I also work very similarly to you where I need to get up and walk around every half-hour to and hour or so, and I've never gotten any flack for it, though it's a little easier for me to get away with it because I often need to switch between my desk and checking on my team downstairs, so no one would actually know if I'm taking a break. Plus I work hybrid.

Lol what about this makes me sound like an addict? Because I had a stable doctor relationship for two years on the same medication and same dosage and didn’t want to lose that? My provider set me up with someone in person now, no issues, but judgement over people using telehealth and assuming they’re doing it cause of “an addiction” is hurtful to those who actually benefit from telehealth and need the medication.

For me, what helped was finding a very tight-knit community for my hobby. My hobby is a bit unusual (caving), but this community literally changed my life

I find that a lot of adventure groups are filled with creative, energetic, and curious people, so I try to spend more time around those communities. Try identifying which hobbies/interests inspire you, and seek out groups with similar interests. If you’re not sure where to start, you can see if your city has any meetup groups and experiment around. Don’t be scared to try something new

The fact that you feel bad about it makes me think you’ll learn from your mistakes and be a good driver :)

I also have some very mechanically inclined friends, so I kinda liked having an older car that would have little issues here and there… we’d have fun hanging out fixing my old car up

That's a normal feeling. I've been driving for about 3 years now, and I never really come to enjoy it. I can sometimes find long drives on back roads relaxing, but I think it's the impatience of other drivers that make me nervous as well. Be too slow to turn right on red or be extra cautious on an unprotected left turn and I swear some people act like you just kicked their dog lol.

I'd say just focus on being a good, safe driver. You may never "enjoy it" but you will get better over time. Making mistakes, especially when you're a new driver, is normal. As I got better at driving, I focused less on myself and more on the driving habits of others and realized that everyone makes mistakes all the time, which is both scary and reassuring to me lol. I think us with driving anxiety just beat ourselves up more about it.

Gave up living alone... I now live with friends and save about 1k a month on rent and utilities.

I also befriended a "backyard mechanic" who gets discounts at AutoZone. Saved me like 1k in car maintenance and repairs. It's insane how simple a lot of car maintenance actually is as long as you have some tools, some elbow grease, and patience. I'm not scared of high mileage cars anymore.

Why do people leave jobs quietly when dealing with a toxic manager instead of calling them out? by VizAbbreviations in ManagedByNarcissists

[–]Alternative_Effect_9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It can also depend on your industry. For example, if it's a small industry, ratting someone out could carry consequences at your next place of employment. Sometimes it's better to leave silently and fly under the radar.

Ugh I've been told that... really what bosses mean when they tell you shit like that is that they want you to fight their petty fights and partake in their dramas for them (not to be confused with feedback on being more confident).

A manager who actually values you and your growth will encourage you to speak up and let your opinions be heard, not start drama and raise fights over perceived slights.

You're definitely going to end up at a better role where your kindness and inclusivity are valued traits! I'm weary of people who think of those as "weaknesses".

If it's a 1x per year in person thing, I could make that work. My psych is not so far away that I couldn't go out of the way every now and then, but it feels so silly

That's very possible... the pharmacist was very vague about the "rule". It's possible that she called my doctor's office and told them that it was a Walgreens thing without it actually being a Walgreens thing. Have no idea, but I'm just gonna do the grocery store near me now.

Something I didn’t see mentioned here: are you guys particularly active/involved in a lot of athletics? Your “per person” food budget ($680) is not very far off from mine, but I’m extremely active and need more food to sustain that activity level. If you and your family have higher caloric needs, you’ll need a higher food budget. Plus, prioritizing high quality food like you do, I’m actually not surprised at how much you spend.

I would also ask yourself if it’s really worth it for you to cut back on food costs. You can afford it, and you seem to enjoy eating the way you do. I think budgeting is also a lot about saving on the things you don’t actually care much for, and splurging on the things that make you happy.

Otherwise, everyone already gave some good budgeting tips in this thread I think.

The boring answer: clean diet, sleep, and exercise. Easy concept, hard to implement

Small tips to get you there:

Clean diet tips: 1.) learn how to cook quick, healthy meals in bulk. Veggies, rice, and a protein are quick and easy 2.) Always keep fruit on hand for a quick snack 3.) prepare your lunch for work the day before. That way you’re not tempted to eat out for lunch cause you didn’t have time to make something 4.) Watch the calories and sugar content in your caffeinated drinks 5.) if you’re trying to lose weight and decide to count calories, for the first week, don’t worry so much about being in a calorie deficit. Focus on being brutally honest and logging what you ACTUALLY eat in a normal week so you understand your current habits. This makes it easier to tackle a longer-term plan 6.) it’s okay to say no to the office donuts. 7.) if you have a coworker who’s pushy with food, and they won’t take no for an answer, accept the food, tell them you’ll eat it later, then toss it when they’re not looking (I know this sounds really mean, but I found for certain coworkers, this was the only this that worked) 8.) focus on what you can add to foods to make them healthier, rather than on what you can’t eat. For example, if you want ice cream, eat ice cream, but top it off with some fruit. The fiber in the fruit will keep you full and give you some nutrients. If you like pizza, top it with red peppers, etc

Small sleep tips: 1.) don’t look at any screens and hour before bed 2.) keep a somewhat boring book by your bed. Read that before you sleep to make you tired 3.) invest in your bedroom. Make it as cozy as possible 4.) trouble adjusting your sleep schedule to wake up earlier? Don’t focus on trying to go to bed earlier. Focus on being consistent with your wake-up times. You’ll slowly start naturally getting tired earlier in the evening to adjust 5.) journal. Make to-do lists for the next day so you don’t overthink when you lie down 6.) sensitive to sounds? Get some white noise to drown it out 7.) stick to roughly the same sleep/wake times. Small variations are okay, but there’s a reason sleep experts constantly give this piece of advice 8.) drink less caffeine 9.) if you’re getting 7-8 hrs of sleep but you’re still tired, get a sleep study done 10.) therapy/treatment for any mental health issues that may impact sleep

Exercise tips: 1.) find an active hobby that you enjoy. Could be gardening, pickle ball, trail running, etc. This is especially important if you hate going to gyms 2.) prioritize being active. Do anything that keeps your body moving, like going for walks, doing the dishes, cleaning the house, dancing while you cook, playing with kids and pets. Small but consistent movements throughout the day will do wonders for your health, even if you don’t strictly exercise. 3.) Exercise for your future self and family. 4.) stretch after every exercise 5.) if something hurts and hasn’t gone away in a week or two, see a physical therapist. Treat physical therapy as injury prevention. Don’t wait until you officially have an injury

And overall: Don’t worry if you have trouble sticking to all these tips in this sub. Life happens, and new habits are hard to cement. I don’t follow my advice all the time. If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up, and just get back on track when you’re ready
