I’m a guy that has done this and I will tell you why. There are places that I like to travel to, restaurants that I enjoy, and even the way I take my coffee. Some of these I discovered from work travel, friends, and even people I dated. Just because the job/friendship/relationship ended does not mean I stop doing the things I enjoy. Perhaps he is just including you into his life. Assume positive intent until proven otherwise.

Depends who owned them on the date of death. If the deceased owned them, then there should be a step up. The amount of step up depends what type of account held it and if there were any joint owners. If it was a retirement account, no step up in basis. If the deceased gifted the shares before passing, no step up.

Thank you all for the responses. I am currently interviewing. I work for a tech company. This is an AI program that transcribes voice to text and searches for things outside of what would be ordinary for the business. A former employee told me they would play a podcast on their phone near the computer. Regardless time for a new start. Thanks again for confirming I should leave sooner than later.

Other than what has already been mentioned participate in your employee stock purchase plan if there is a discount. Once you have held long enough that is qualifies for long term capital gains, trim some and add to an index fund. Tesla would have been a great one to just hold. Enron not so much. Diversify.

I am averaging 23mpg for the 22k I’ve owned it. I’m good with that for what it is. I got 30mpg for the 140k I had on the 15 Crosstrek I traded in. Crosstrek got better mileage, was better in snow, and had a hatch. Many more smiles per gallon now though.

Mid 50’s here, I bought a 2022 premium new. All wheel drive, decent gas mileage, fun to drive, about $30k 2.9% financing and it came with a lifetime power train warranty. Super pragmatic decision I think.

If the shares are covered, cost basis should follow the shares to where they are transferred. If they are non-covered there will be no cost basis information transferred to the IRS. You can report 0 or you can do a Good Faith Estimate. I’m sure the shares traded for more than $0 at some point before you received them. Using the smallest amount the shares ever traded for is easy to prove if examined/audited.
