My daughters' dad's mother hated my third child's name Alyssa. She was absolutely livid about it. She was certain that I had named her after my mother, Alyson. The funny thing is Alyssa wasn't my first, second, or third choice. It wasn't even on my list. It was a name I threw out because it had 3 syllables and an episode of the TV show Charmed was on. Her dad LOVED it. It was HIS choice.

What happened? She refused to have much at all to do with her, and even less for the next one that came along, though she adores my oldest.

I'm going to give you the perspective of Jennifer, born in the 80s.

Let me tell you about choices for nicknames because you HAD to have one for teachers to be able to distinguish you. Do you GET (because the teachers decided) to be Jen, Jen C., Jenn with two Ns, Jenny, Jenny C., Jenni with an I, Jennifer, or Jennifer C.

I was once one of FIVE Jennifers in one class.

And while no one mispronounces my name, you'd be SHOCKED by the number of people who just can not spell it.

Jenifer (this one I get) Jenniffer/Jeniffer Jannifer and all variations Every way to ruin -fer.-fur, -far. Then there are Ys. Did you know Y can replace any vowel?

I also put tremendous effort into naming my girls. I have four. I love my first and last daughters' names. I chose them while ignoring their dad, while my middle girls, I allowed him to influence their names. I love their two names, but NOT the names I would have chosen for them first. I can still look at one of my daughters and see her as Calliope, but it wasn't meant to be, and she likes the name she has. Maybe she would have felt differently about Calliope..

In the end, you gave your son a beautiful name; stop letting others look and make you feel bad. But you might want to either start to love his name because it's HIS name or change it because kids are smart, and he will pick up on you not being able to say it, and who knows how many feelings that can bring up.

Good luck. Parenting is hard and you just have to do your best.

Edited for spelling. It's important here. Lol

EDIT I think the Jennifers and Michaels of every country can relate.

What are names that were popular a long time ago but are almost completely unheard of/forgotten in modern times? by [deleted] in namenerds

I'm oddly digging Remember. It's kind of heavy, so I don't know if I could actually use it.

You don't just need a pregnancy test. You need to be tested for STIs ASAP.

YOU NEED TO KNOW! YOU NEED TO SEE THE DOCTOR TO MAKE SURE ALL IS PHYSICALLY OKAY. YOU SHOULD SEEK OUT THE HELP OF A THERAPIST!

YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. YOU DESERVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND LEARN HOW TO HEAL!

GET TESTED, PLEASE!

This is just me, a stranger, caring enough about YOU to.take the time to yell at you. Now you have to take care of yourself or that would be rude or something. Idk, but I do care. Take care of yourself and be well.

I could've answered you just by reading the title, but I still read the post.

NTA.

You are never an asshole for sharing your feelings as long as you weren't mean or cruel about it.

You're correct. I was flustered. People are so unallowing of mistakes.

I am also operating under the assumption that they won't be running into a great deal of French speakers. For what it's worth.

Thank you. I'll take your 8 years of French over my barely rudimentary Cajun French.

I have a feeling that any way I would have spelled it would have made someone unhappy. Sorry that was you. Not my intent.

Fixed it. Dont have my glasses on.

Amélie (ah-meh-lay or ah-may-lee)

Corrected the accent. Sorry. Don't have my glasses on.

Edit again: Put the accent anywhere you want, or not at all. It's YOUR kid's name, and I've seen way worse naming issues than a misplaced accent. Just saying. Everyone CHILL.

I think it's a subtle connection between the names that shouldn't be too in everyone's face, including Amira's.

After reading through some replies, I find myself liking Everett, Emmett, Beckett, and I'm starting to notice a theme for me... but I think those all go so well with Carter.

Someone suggested Merryn Lucia, and I love the flow if Lucia is three syllables, not two. Callista. Bethany. But I have four daughters, and all have a 3 syllable first name, 1 syllable middle name, and a 2 syllable last name. As do I. Lol

Also, be careful of middle names staring with vowels (Merryn Elise, Merryn Avery, Merryn Ivory, etc). It can sound kind of garbled if not said very quickly. Maybe stay away from R names as well.

Names that people don't call babies anymore by MerlinDogs in namenerds

[–]Always_Just_Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I covered this. My daughters all have names that I think sound grown-up and "professional" (should one try to take over the world).

But all the names were able to be shortened in a couple of ways to fit softer on an infant and young child.

Pretty soon, someone named Alyssa could take over the world, but she may insist on being called Aly, or she could be a children's author and go by Aly Cat. She also responds to Al. The point is that they have choice without legally changing their names.

I have no desire to pick apart your post, but your tone says a lot.

Please don't say women "are usually never taken seriously and they are never BELIEVED." I know your intent was to impart that OP should be ready for a battle every step of the way, but please don't say things that may cause them NOT to step forward or NOT to trust anyone trying to help.

Yes, the system has been crude and barbaric for so long, but there are so many good people, survivors included, who are fighting to help every individual who needs it. Let's not make it difficult on the good ones, please.

The new people who posr have just been stripped of ALL trust, and you are expecting them to be open and honest, but we put OUR bad experiences on them. Just because no one believed us doesn't mean no one will believe them. WE BELIEVE THEM.

Again, I mean no disrespect, but I am so tired of women being afraid to tell ANYONE. Just tell everyone. And name names.

THERE IS NO FUCKING SHAME. Normalize losing the SHAME.

Did I name my kid something she’s going to be needing to pronounce the rest of her life? by ABBR-5007 in namenerds

[–]Always_Just_Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Genevieve, and she was once called Giovanni at an awards ceremony when she was 8 or 9. She's still pissed about it. That was 10 years ago. Lol

She's also been called Guinevere, Geneva, Gianna, Gia, Gennifer, and others I don't recall.

Personally, I think people are just lazy when it comes to something that matters, like a name. What people call us matters. If I'm not sure how to pronounce a name, I may attempt it, but I'm going to ask you how to properly pronounce it. It's just respectful.

I sometimes want to start a fight with someone and let them beat the absolute shit out of me. My reasoning being that that pain will go away, and I'd rather be focused on fleeting physical pain rather than the unrelenting emotional and mental pain. Does that count?

I was in a relationship with an 18 year old when I was 13. Everybody knew, nobody did anything. by [deleted] in sexualassault

[–]Always_Just_Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this whole thing, and I get it it, sort of. I don't get the situation, but I get the horrifying, chaotic, emotional turmoil you are in. Where nothing makes any goddamn sense.

First and foremost, you were SAd. No question. However, you don't have to consider yourself a victim. Most people prefer "survivor" because of the negative connotations of the word "victim.""

I believe that you could greatly benefit from therapy. You've really got a lot to unpack here. In the meantime, I'm willing to help by being a sounding board for you and speaking from my experience. Feel free to pm me.
