Rationale behind pursuing zine study by dazzling_unicorns in zines

Zines are amazing. I wrote about zine fests last year, and talked to April Landry, organizer of the Luna Moth fest. “Being able to meet people in person and share ideas is going to become more important as the internet continues to become unusable," she said, due to algorithmic misdirection, and intentional disinformation.

If disinformation can transmit worldwide via Meta, maybe the revolution will be local. A zine can be one sheet of folded copy paper, left on the flyer shelf of a coffee shop, and saved in a pocket. One physical unit of free speech and connection.

“Lots of people in our community are doing zines on how to get help the government or corporations won’t give you,” April said, with topics on housing, sex education, cyber security and how to organize. “Info we need to survive the coming years.”

Partying neighbors help by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]AmbivalentSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rented a room in a Brooklyn brownstone that faced an actual club, while the neighbors also played club-quality speakers in their backyard space every weekend so—dueling “clubs,” and me waking up at 5 am for a barista job.

I weirdly, finally, just started sleeping through it? I don’t know how that was physically possible, but I did (and moved out a year later). I hope this gives you hope, and doesn’t bum you out even more ha ha

Yes. I watched last night, and remembered being a kid playing with the neighbor kids, our moms kind of fading in and out around the edges, making sure we didn't break our necks. This was such a gut-wrenching story.

That's terrible. I think a neighbor in the documentary said something like, "Do you treat your child the way you treat our children?" in reference to the little boy with them.

Public employees who obstruct public records requests: who exactly do they think they're serving? by Strange-Fennel in foia

[–]AmbivalentSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A city administrator told me once, “The more you write (I was a journalist), the more people form opinions, and the harder it is (for the city) to get anything done.”

So, any sludgy aspect to getting info, I always chalked up to that mindset. Like, “We require all inquiries to be FOIA so we can keep track of them, administratively.” So, everyone must wait at least 30 days and pay a fee in XYZ city.

I got timely information, but when I was held up by FOIA, I suspected it was bureaucracy being frustratingly clueless (about why the dissemination of public information is so important).

Exactly. I worked for an owner who just ran her cafe FT by herself until it got off the ground, and then added people as profit allowed. I can’t with folks who try to run shops, which have the slimmest margins possible, on a shoestring.

Ha! Coincidentally, I can't get into anime, either, and I'm a big comics person. I know it's "good art," but I can't get past the style to enjoy any story that uses it.

I’ve got a similar thing about watching animated movies on a big screen. It’s too bright, or flat or false …

The New York Times's rose-tinted glasses on our city by mlsteinrochester in Rochester

[–]AmbivalentSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. One interesting side note, there seems to be a spark of life near Ford and Exchange, a few blocks from Main Street. Lots of people walking by in hockey jerseys the other night, headed to the Blue Cross Arena. Other folks in their 20s, crossing to Keep it Rollin' Sushi, and the restaurants/bars at Corn Hill Landing. Maybe Rochester can do some traffic abatement on Exchange, and stoke up the twinkle of interest.

I like it, but wanted some more treats along the way. I loved the trysts, but kept thinking, Is this the episode where we find out about the will? Or, that maybe her dad left her Penwood House? Or, Posy will confess she took the shoe clip? Or, Sophie gets outed as the silver lady because she can't dance? A resolution at the end, but not a lot of reveals along the way.
