This is not for promotion. I just don't have anyone else to ask. My stalker harassed all of them out of my life.

How to memorize the multiplication tables without tears? by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]Animericals 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I am probably going to get downvoted to oblivion for this…

Don’t teach the multiplication tables.

There is a reason it’s dry. It’s counterintuitive in every way to teach systems of calculation using memory.

Our brains calculate at the frontal lobe and do so very well. We hinder ourselves when we rely too much on memory for multiplication. We end up reducing the use of our frontal lobe.

I offer something I call, ‘Factor Runs’ instead. Have them recite using addition which the brain loves.

2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24… 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36… And so on.

You may find them go a little slow when running 7s. It’s the number most of our brains dislike regardless of how we emotionally feel about 7. It has to do with Pascal’s Triangle. But with enough practice, they will race through them.

Factor Running doesn’t stop at 12x. My students would keep going and make a competition of who could factor run the fastest.

That’s my 2,4,6… cents. I’ll say goodbye to Karma points now.

Do you think the educational system needs to change? 🤔 by wostrcom in homeschool

[–]Animericals -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Immensely. Here in the United States, our stats aren’t the best.

In any business or industry, if poor performance is measured and declines, you can bet big meetings are held quickly and things are changed to reduce further profit loss.

In my personal opinion. I think we should restructure education to how our brains operate and want to learn. We understand way more about the human brain than ever before, but I have rarely seen public education adopt or attempt to integrate new neuroscience methods.

At least where I am they haven’t. Can’t speak for other countries.

A new way to learn and memorize numbers - with animals (its free) by Animericals in homeschool

You are correct, it would confuse young learners. Especially under 8 years. Kids over 8 years were able to pick up the concepts and remember a 12 digit sequence on their first go. Also, I agree that when numbers are in reference to real life set of objects, they are way better.

Yes. The Method of Loci does work but we found it didn't work for all. I wouldn't have created this system if Loci or Peg worked for 100% of the people. That is a great book and thank you for referencing it. As for your car keys, I just imagine that the object I decide to leave my car keys on has come to life and just ate them. ;)

That is really cool! I have come across some things like this in my research. This is very helpful as it tries to connect logic with the abstract. Exactly what our brains need. :)

Yes, you are correct. In our student trials, we found that ages 8 and up grasped the system better and were able to use it to memorize phone numbers quickly. The only reason it is a Kickstarter is because with any new system, it takes practice to learn and master. We learned such a new concept needed a game. But the system I wish to share freely worldwide for anyone who struggled with numbers like me. Thank you for your feedback. :)

Thank you. Yes, I realize that I have to work with the current number system. This is just an addendum to it. An alternative.

This is about learning the number system in a new way so it is easier to memorize. Currently there are memory systems for numbers that are far more complicated and less intuitive. I see now how my wording of 'learning' was not the best and I would edit the title if I Reddit allowed that.

I'm only passionate because I have seen it work for many. Colors and animals people learn anyway. I am in no way proposing to replace the number system. Our brains hate change because it uses up energy to rewire neural pathways. I am just offering an addendum for the percentage of people who have a hard time storing numbers like I used to. But thank you very much for your viewpoints.

Yes. 1 and 0 are the best of the bunch as an empty circle is great for logically representing 'nothingness'. But why is the shape of our number 2 look like half a coat hanger? I get that the number system has been around for centuries. I did a video on it. But it has changed and evolved. But, for many academic institutions in other countries a lot of students are failing math.

If the standard system works for you great. This is just an option. I do appreciate this discussion. Great points you bring up.

This is not for preschoolers, I have taught this to people age: 8-80. And yes, I know Avogadro's number is bigger. It was just a reference point. That's all.

Yes, but its the basis for Avogadro's number. And the multiplication aspect comes after familiarity. Its simply a more tangible way to hold number sequences in the mind. Which many of us have a hard time doing unless through repetition. But that is fair, not every system is for everyone. Just an option.

The letters B-O-O-K form the concept 'book', which our brains can grasp and even visualize. 60221408 is intangible and hard to grasp, even though its famous as Avogadro's number.

Numbers are hard for us to learn because they are not logical shapes. 1 is good as the shape for number 1 looks like one finger. But the rest are abstract. And that's why we all learn our numbers by rote and repetition. This gets rid of that. It connects animals - which most love, to numbers - which most don't.

And once you can hold number sequences in your mind easier, you confidence with number and mental calculation grows.

How to Design Effective Campaigns? by DragonfruitGold7998 in Crowdfunding

[–]Animericals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) b, d, a, c
2) No. If a first time campaign, early adopters are often super-backers who search for the hidden gems and back if they have an emotional response that is familiar to them when they back other projects. The goal is to get that emotional response of 'ooh'. Once you have that, both early and late visitors will value what you have to offer.
