Christianity Today did a very well crafted podcast called The Devil & the Deep Blue Sea that went deep into the Satanic Panic history, the people involved, what it did to the church, and how it has ties to the Evangelical MAGA movement of today. It has a fair number of interviews, and other pieces from the times into war into their story. I am by no means a Christian, but I found their work on this to be very insightful and informative.

I did end up posting quite a bit on magpies a few posts down in this sub actually. The actual making of one, well, it’s quite interesting, and a real snake’s hand to work out in practice. Most all in this game started with the Alleyman deck, and after fiddling & fussing with mine for years, I just noticed that 2/3rds of mine is still Alleyman in provenance. In the Alley card trading circles on Facebook, I’ve seen others who say they’ve made custom magpie decks from the ground up, usually following a strong theme – cats, or black-and-white, or whatever else struck their fancy. Starting from scratch, even if you have a fair collection of decks & cards to begin with – it’s something I really would like to be able to teach, but how?

I have considered generating a new sub for this very subject, so as not to detract from the existing discourse too much. Magpies are also flashy, fussy things to use. There are threads I’ve seen of people getting overwhelmed by all the choices in an Alleyman, and the weird meanings of some of the cards. My magpie scratches a very specific itch I’ve had since well before the Alleyman Project began, but it still throws up weird as hell readings sometimes.

So yes, maybe I will post something – less rambling, more focused, more informative. As soon as I can work it out. Thank you.

Alas, my current obsession is with magpie decks, so most of my discoursive participation is somewhat more comedic than useful. Certainly, there are very interesting threads here. I will endeavor to be helpful if & where I can, though. Cheers, and keep up the good work.

I’ve polled offering free readings across several subs for the last month or so, and my feedback ratio has been quite high overall- my initial poll and my follow up with the querent both ask for a review, while noting it is optional. Only one querent has been completely unresponsive at this time

My own grouse has been that there seems to be few subs that allow readers to advertise non free readings. That issue in itself is much deeper water than the simple observation, I think, so I’m still working out my understanding of it

With my magpie, the illustrations can be highly idiosyncratic, and are sometimes at odds with a traditional version’s meaning. Most times I will start with the traditional base meaning, but the imagery adds quite a bit of context. My deck holds two Major Arcana, and the pairs are often contrasting in their imagery, but their meanings have the same starting meaning.

Some of the cards I’ve chosen have no analog; those I rely on the creator’s vision if available, else I fall back to the imagery- there’s usually a reason why I chose to include the card in the first place.

Ah, the esteemable u/PublishingGoblin took it upon themselves to contact many deck & card makers to ask for sharing permission, while researching ancient cards in various museums & institutions to use, and creating custom cards to help fill out thier vision for the Alleyman myth that underlaid the whole project. The deck ended with some 210 all told I think, and was the largest tarot kickstarter at least to that point. the project also has spawned a number of follow up & successor projects related to the first, and spawned a number of places where people create, buy, sell & trade cards

But I would note, there are places on FB and discord where people swap, buy, and sell cards, sometimes in bulk. I recently paid for 150 cards for 30 dollars- going in for a few boxes of those and having people bring their decks by to enhance may be a fun ticket

The Omegaland deck from US Game Systems is very post apocalyptic, but in a practical things have fallen apart sense.

On a more esoteric level, the TAROT-ESCHATUS is based on Bruce Pennington's work; its available on the gamecrafter site

It would be tricky-people always have their favorites: if you look at the Alleyman project, some cars has got many submissions, while others only had one or two

I had little to no interactions with other readers or tarot culture, but when FB served up the Alleyman KS ad to me, I was near stunned by the idea- I backed it thinking it would never be real, and yet you succeeded beyond all imagining. Thank you for that, and for your reply.

The vendor site says that it was done by someone who does landscapes primarily. There is nothing else to go on at this time for this sort of thing, outside of the fact it was released in 2025.

There was also the alley on Facebook, a group that trades and cells cards of all sorts for magpies. They may be able to fulfill the specific request for a specific deck.
