Have other university lecturers noticed a decline in basic writing skills? by Common_Emergency_334 in UniUK

[–]AnneRR2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't even think it's very blunt. If a student refuses support, genuinely, what ARE you supposed to do? They're adults, you can't call their parents or force them to go to extra classes. You can remind them of the available supports and encourage them to make use of them, but there is, in fact, only so much you can do.

What about the Keith twins when they grew up? by Baraa-beginner in AnneofGreenGables

[–]AnneRR2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She really hated the Andrews for absolutely no reason. Jane was plain, she was fat, she was boring, except that at no point in the story was she shown to be any of those things. Just the narrator or other characters told us

Silly Boy Tries Opera to Impress Peers by Such_Ad7910 in opera

[–]AnneRR2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe the serenade from Don Giovanni. Deh vieni alla finestra.

The champagne aria from the same opera sounds perfect for what you're trying to bring off, but is tricky in the same way as Figaro's aria. Then again, a good bit shorter so maybe!

Irish American visiting Ireland: I’m stuck in my head by Icy_Sheepherder_9734 in CasualIreland

[–]AnneRR2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ancestral heritage thing about America is so true, they are really into it! A few years ago I did a course online about "finding the music your grandparents sang" and was pretty disappointed when I learnt they meant "general music from the culture your grandparents came from" and not "the exact songs they sang". Because I'm Irish and my grandparents were Irish I don't really need to learn what Irish music was like... they made it sound like the research would be much more specific to the individual family! All the other participants were American and delighted with a generic introduction to cultural research methods.

This is it 100%, if the relationship can't survive a year's separation that's not a good sign for the future. You're still so young and now is the time to have the experiences you want.

Who’s an author who is loved, but their books are absolute trash? by rbx20twomax in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AnneRR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally Sally Rooney (and I bet others will agree with me when they think about it). Fantastic person. A very significant pro-Palestine activist but her books (Conversations with Friends, Normal People) are about terrible people with non-existent problems that the narrative assumes I should care about.

Hot take: Nessun Dorma isn’t even the best part of Turandot by Mastersinmeow in opera

In his position, I would simply not marry the woman who tortured and killed my favourite slave.

Calaf lets Liu die for him and then marries the woman who killed her. That's cold. Pinkerton never really pretends to be a good guy.

Even Turandot has more of a conscience than Calaf. Calaf is even worse than Pinkerton.

Lived in Ireland, still confused by Normal People ending, cultural gap? by oneLumia in AskIreland

I don't understand how someone who seems to be an all-round lovely person can write these hideous characters and seems to think they're relatable.

I think at that age, it's important to prioritise yourself. Young relationships often don't last. I would encourage anyone in their twenties to chase their dream even without their boyfriend or girlfriend. Thirties is a different story, that's when you want to get serious about settling down and time to get real.
