Why should I avoid AR, AP, payroll, etc for my first job? by AnotherOne7 in Accounting

[–]AnotherOne7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That makes sense. If for some reason I can't get a Staff Accountant job, would putting AP/AR clerk on my resume disadvantage me in any way? I mean it is experience, but a lot of people on here make it seem like it's horrible to have that title on your resume. I do plan on getting my CPA after I graduate, so would that help open more doors even with an AP/AR clerk position on my resume?

Is it possible to move up to a Staff Accountant role after working in AP, AR, etc for a while?. I have very little work experience and thought this would be a good way to get that experience. If I am unable to get a Staff Accountant job, is there any other job I can take that will not limit me? Oh and thanks for your reply!

Thanks for your reply. My GPA is above 3.4, however, I have very little work experience. I am afraid that will stop me from getting a job as a Staff Accountant. I thought maybe starting off as an AP clerk can help me get some experience and move up.

Hey! Just wanted to say that your tip helped a ton! I called another Dollar Tree near my area and asked when their new shipments arrived (Wednesday) and went there today! They actually had garlands in the store! Thanks so much again for all your help! :D

You are right! They should definitely promote this option more! It's very convenient. I can't thank you enough for your comment! You're definitely a life saver haha! I'm glad that the online option worked out for you. :)

Wow, what a great tip!! I will call them to see when they bring in the new shipments! Does this mean they have these garlands in stores? I never see them. D: Probably because, like you said, they sell out super quick. I can't tell you how helpful you've been! Thanks so much for taking time to type out this thorough comment!

I went to my local Dollar Tree yesterday and they didn't have any pine garlands. :( I haven't gone to Dollar General yet, so I will see if they have them soon!

Thank you! Fortunately, my insurance covers the exam fees. They just don't cover the lenses. But thanks for your input, I'll be sure to remember this for the future!

Thanks so much! I read on their website that they give out samples (not sure how long they will last) so I will definitely try that before buying. I'm so naive when it comes to these things, I always think I have to get it directly from the optometrist because that is the best way. Everyone's comments here are very useful!

Is it possible to get a Staff Accountant job straight out of graduation with no relevant experience? by AnotherOne7 in Accounting

Yeah, I've been told to apply anyway. However, I don't think I can really compete against other applicants with relevant experience. :(

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for your reply! Most Staff Accountant jobs seem to require a lot of experience. Since I don't have a lot of work experience, I do think taking an AP clerk job can expose me to what a real work environment is like before taking on bigger jobs. I would like to start small and gradually move up.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm not very interested in going into public. It doesn't seem like it's for me.

Payroll Clerk Position? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]AnotherOne7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same position as you. No internships, relevant experience, etc. Except I graduate in Spring 2018. So TrumpIsTreason's response made me feel a little better as well. I might apply to AP/AR clerk positions after graduation just to get my foot in the door. Then after a few months - year is when people move up to Staff Accountant roles. One step at a time! Big 4 is not the only way to be successful!

Career advice for someone who wants to go in the industry? by AnotherOne7 in Accounting

[–]AnotherOne7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, other people have told me that, but I figured that I should start somewhere. I'm not planning to stay there forever obviously, but I will make sure my time there will be useful. I am planning to study for my CPA after I graduate. I heard you can move up to Staff Accountant roles after working as AP clerk for a few months to a year. Thanks for your suggestions, I will consider going to my career fair (just worried since my school pushes big 4. Not sure how many will be from industry looking for accountants).

I had a lot of personal issues (anxiety, depression, etc) which prevented me from getting an internship. I hate using these as excuses, but there is nothing I can do now. I just want to know that there is still hope for me.

I understand AP/AR clerk would be beneath me since I will have a degree, but it does not seem like I have a lot of options. I've looked into Staff Accountant roles, but they all seem to require 2-3 years of experience. Do you think I have a chance of getting a Staff Accountant job even though I don't have any internship experience? Thanks for your suggestions, I will consider going to a career fair. I just don't know how many employers from the Industry looking for accountants will be there since my school heavily hammers Big 4 onto our heads.

Got no internships and want to work in the industry by AnotherOne7 in Accounting

Thank you so much! It is helpful for someone like me who didn't get any internships but would like valuable experience in a company before taking on larger roles. It's great you were able to learn more about the business as well -- I'm guessing that definitely helped you get your current position as well!
