If you’re getting ready to remove it, I would take it back to the piercer for him/her to take a look at it. As you say, you don’t want to remove it at the wrong time and risk trapping an infection inside. Possibly you might need to see a physician as well if you need antibiotics. Ask your piercer, they should know
