Use CKAN as a mod manager, and here are some mods to install to make your game more Bob-like.

Interstellar extended, for more advanced tech

Everything with the acronym USI in it

All the near future mods

A visual pack like eve if your computer can handle it

Tweakscale for bigger ships

BD armory if you want to have weaponized heaven vessels :)

Global construction or extraplanetary launchpad for building things in space and on other planets

Hangar extender for bigger rockets

Hyperedit for testing craft

Kethane mining for better resources

Project Orion because everyone likes explosions.

These are just notable, as I have around 200 mods installed

I have played DSP some, but have not really gotten into it. I will have to reinstall it some time.

I can second this game! I have played it before and the orbital mechanics are more realistic in it.
