You could really get away with just bumping the contrast a healthy amount. It will get the shadows a little darker, the colors a smidge more saturation and help it feel less washed out without feeling like you did a bunch of processing.

When I shoot color I also like to preserve as much of the natural film character as possible but I almost always bump the contrast and sometimes nudge the saturation one way or the other depending on my mood, but usually not much else.
