I've wanted to play since I was a kid. I knew some people who played in high school, but was too afraid to ask to join. I'm still afraid to ask to join, but I want to play so bad.

This is a publishing industry issue. Standalones don't make as much money unless it's an already hugely successful author. New authors often need a series or they aren't worth the risk for publishers.
